Earlier this morning our Day in History gave a short summary of how Gladstone got its name (on this day in 1887). Someone on Facebook asked why they would name a U.P. town after a British politician. When you think of events in their context, it had not been too many years since War with the British in 1812-14, and the country was still recovering from the Civil War. It was a time the U.S. needed all the friends it could get, so the push to warm up to foreign leaders, especially those with whom we'd had arguments in the past.

We would entertain alternate theories about the motivation for the town's naming. One notable thing about Prime Minister Gladstone, is how he did not get along well with Queen Victoria, who complained, "He always addresses me as if I were a public meeting."

Sorry again for a late-in-the-day Shoebox Memory, but we didn't finish the Cam update before a beautiful autumn day called us out to enjoy it. As I type these words, we are moving toward a lovely Fall sunset here in the Keweenaw.

Have a good week :o)

My comment should've been on the What's Up page.
Oops! Strange things happening with my computer.

An interesting bit of history ~ thanks, Charlie.

Me thinks the old gent was probably having a 'bad hair day'.;-<

He should change his name to Sadstone.

Somebody looks like he had a bad day :-(

The day was a beauty here yesterday. Got a lot of
our outside stuff put away, so we were out enjoying
it too, Charlie. We have to enjoy it while we can.

I spent all afternoon doing general cleanup and mowing. I mowed my grass as short as I dared hoping that it will be the last one for the year. I've noticed that the shorter the grass is the easier it is to rake the leaves which will be falling before too long.

Have a great Monday! :°)
