I am proclaiming that the lady who took today's photos is a "bee whisperer", since I don't know too many folks that can coax a bee onto their finger without getting stung.

Donna MacIntosh was checking out the sunflowers in her yard, when she spotted a bee on one of them. She said that the bee seemed "out of it" and figured it probably needed some warmth, so she blew on it and it moved one leg. After that she kept blowing on it and put her finger out. Before you know it, the bee realized that her finger meant "warmth", so he crawled around on her finger for a bit. Donna said when he started moving more, she put him back on the sunflower where the warm sun was hitting and he came to, then flew off.

The third shot is amazing to me, also, because even with a telephoto lens, Donna had to get right up close and personal with that bee, in order to look him in the eye and check out the pollen sticking to him like that. Close encounters of the buzzing kind. Pretty brave, if you ask me…and I'm not talking about the bees here. ;-)

Then the last photo, shows a different visitor to Donna's sunflowers, but a similar one. I'm not certain if wasps and bees are related or not, but I'm guessing perhaps they are. They aren't as fuzzy and their wings are positioned and shaped differently, but they seem to have many similarities, too. What do you think?

Great pictures Donna!

Those are some pretty up close photos. Way closer to bees and wasps than I care to get. Bees and wasps are related. Bees are more like farmers taking care of the crops and wasps are like hunters. Ants are also in the same family

Hi
I'm no expert, but I know there are different species of bee, as well. The second insect could have been a different type of bee.

Wow, what unique photos! The 'full of pollen' made me chuckle....looks like he's wearing a Colonial wig.
Thank you, Donna, these are great up close and personal shots!

You can pet a honey bee while on a flower. They will sort of
buzz and you can feel the vibration. My wife does this often. I
did it once. It just buzzed and flew away.

LOL ;) Don't think I wanna try that, Tom, with my luck the honey bee would be having a bad day.:<
