What a strange feeling it must be to be out on Lake Superior, kayaking amongst the icebergs. That's just what two of today's photo contributors did and what they both discovered is that there are a number of big ice formations still floating around out there, but more interesting is how far below the water the rest of the icebergs go.

The first three photos were sent in by Beth Jukuri, who was out kayaking in Keweenaw Bay with her daughter Georgeann to check out the icebergs that are still floating near Second Sand Beach. Beth described them as magical, yet daunting in size. She added that they are rock solid to hit with the kayak and that you could hear parts of them breaking off. One in particular they were heading towards when they heard a loud SPLASH... half of it fell into the water. Pretty amazing!

The next four shots come from Frank Kohl, who coincidentally was also out at Second Sand Beach, near Pequaming, just outside of L'Anse. He found much of the same while out there in his kayak, but the shots he took give a great perspective of the massive amount of ice these bergs have frozen yet underwater, too. It looks like somewhere in the Antarctic and reminds me of the Titanic story. Sure am glad both Frank and Beth made it back without any damage to their kayaks. ;-)

Finally, the last shot was snapped by Katriina Hopper, along Keweenaw Bay. Like in Charlie's video from yesterday, you can see there is still ice floating around right in the bay there between L'Anse and Baraga, too. I wonder if anyone in Baraga County has thought about running a contest to see who can guess when the last iceberg will melt away. Might be a fun way to raise some money for a good cause

Oh my! If I'm going to row amongst icebergs, I want something stronger than a kayak!;>

These are just gorgeous photos! Thank you, Beth, Frank, and Katriina, for sharing!

Were all of them shot today?
Mary says: They weren't shot today, but within the past week or so.

I wish that I could have seen this in person. Thank you for pasty.com

From a kayak those icebergs look as big as the one that sank the Titanic! My grandmother was supposed to come over on the Titanic when she was 12 years old. They were late arriving and ended up on the next ship. Thank goodness for that.

I have the next 2 days off from work. I swear - if
I had the $$, I'd be driving to Baraga after waking
up tomorrow afternoon to witness this! :D Just
amazing! But I am very thankful that I had the
opportunity to experience the great freeze hanging
late
here downstate - walking way past the Grand Haven
lighthouse - on frozen water; don't seem that long
ago...
