Today we get an ice report from the shores of Lake Michigan near Menominee. Brenda Leigh was in the area for an appointment early this week and couldn't believe the ice shoves on the shore near the Menominee North Pier Light. Thank goodness she had her camera with her and started snapping shots to share.

I love the way she framed the Lighthouse with the ice in the first three photos. With all that ice around there, it sure doesn't look like we're nearing the end of April soon.

The remaining photos show the ice shove on the shores near the Lighthouse. You can see what kind of damage that pile up of ice created, pushed up against trees with branches broken and laying on top the ice. In the last two photos it shows the shove so far onto the shoreline, that it's blocking part of the roadway that goes out to the Lighthouse. It even pushed one tree over, with the one next to it leaning like it is ready to topple, too. The red/orange thing in the last photo is a sled that was carried along in the moving ice and broken up in the process.

So, winter hasn't quite loosened the grip it has on us here UP North. There is still ice on the lakes and here in the Copper Country, we still have snowbanks on the ground. I think the May Flowers may have to be renamed to June Flowers this year. :->

Just some more good evidence of the Winter this has been!

Wow...That's a lot of ice, now all we need is rum and Coke.

I agree with you both! ;)

Interesting shots as usual, Brenda.

Very impressive photos. Something to think of this coming summer if I ever get to complaining about the heat.

So, what's the chance Lake Michigan at Mackinaw City will be warm enough to swim in in August. Ya think there might still be some ice then?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, April 25, 2014 - 07:32 pm:

Great photos, thanks. There was an article in I believe the Sunday or Monday Free Press, on opening Mackinaw Island this year. They were waiting on ice breakers to break paths for the ferries to run. They badly need the freight ferries to bring over the supplies to fix up the hotels, restaurants, etc for the season. And they NEED 600 horses transported from the mainland to the island. Up until now, EVERYTHING has had to be flown in, including paint, granite counter tops, food, and everything else you can think of! It did say that the Grand Hotel will open on this Monday, April 28, whether or not the ferries can run yet. What a winter this year! I guess it is too bad they didn't transport a lot of the supplies on snowmobiles while it was still safe ice, lol.

Great photos, but where the heck is Spring?

By Brenda Leigh (Brownmoose) on Saturday, April 26, 2014 - 10:21 am:

Thanks to everyone for all the nice compliments.
Happy Spring to all as well. Marianne thank you for
the info on the Grand Hotel. It might be a good time
to go there, limited activity and quiet too.

Oh wow, Brenda! Those are totally awesome! Wish I
could have been there!
