Today's photos are a continuation of the mess of melting here in the Keweenaw. Beth Jukuri was out driving on the back roads of Tapiola and snapped some "spring mess" photos to share.

Her first shot makes me think that the letter carrier is going to need a boat to get to this mailbox for delivery of their mail, not to mention that the folks who live here will also need a boat or perhaps hip waders to pick up their mail.

Along with the spring melt, comes pot holes in the roads we travel and here again, Beth found a good one, disguised as an innocent looking puddle. But look at that tree branch standing up in that puddle…goodness, that's one deep pot hole there. Thankfully, someone took the time to stick that branch in there to warn others that it's a deep one.

The next thing encountered was a tree that had fallen right across the road. Beth didn't mention if they were able to remove this obstacle or if they had to turn around and head a different way. A chainsaw would have been handy right about then.

Beth's last two photos were taken of the Sturgeon River, which you can see is opened up and running again. There is always a concern this time of year, that rivers will overflow their banks and flood the area. Hopefully, the melt will continue at a slower pace, so that won't happen along the shores of the Sturgeon.

Here UP North, I'd have to say that springtime might just be the messiest season of them all.

Think I know now why we always preferred the Autumn season to visit anywhere in MI.;)

Nice pics! If we used warning sticks for potholes here in SE-MI, we would need an entire forest, Gump :-)

There was a recent post on Facebook where someone had planted flowers in a bunch of potholes. I think it was overseas, maybe in the Netherlands if I recall correctly.

And the hole is how deep?

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 - 04:19 am:

Some signs of Spring for the Keweenaw, anyway.

Mess was the right word to use. I think you'll have
a lot of it :-(

Alex, so true! Although I think we wouldn't be able to see the forest for the trees!!

Mary Drew - that would be Tapiola back roads. We have a two great Houghton County Road Commission drivers but you can't win sometimes during the spring thaw.

Mary says: Oops...my mistake, Laura. I've fixed the location in my notes above. And yes, HUGE kudos to our County Road Commission drivers. Year round they keep our roads in the best shape they can with the weather we experience.
