Nathan Miller took his Kite Aerial Photography Rig out near White City recently, for a look at the South Entry Lighthouse from overhead. He reports about the adventure himself:

It was another cold day, with ice as far as the eye could see and I had nowhere to hide from the blustery weather. I did manage to fly two cameras at the same time, accumulating several thousand photos by the end of my adventure.

I started at the South Portage Entry Lighthouse, which was a good mile hike from the parking area near the White City Beach boat launch. From there my plan was to hike another mile over to the Jacobsville Lighthouse, then maybe get to the cliffs if I had time. Unfortunately, I made the "wise" decision not to pack up my kite for the hike, so I wound up hauling my big kite into the wind for over a mile between the two lighthouses. By the time I got there, the light and my camera batteries were fading, but not before I got a couple quality shots to make the trip worth it.
Thanks for the look-see, Nathan. Amazing photos both far and near of the beacons. It's pretty neat to see the roof and catwalk up close like that on the South Entry Lighthouse, too. Nathan commented that it looks like the roof needs a good painting. ;->

Winter can really make for beautiful pictures! Sure did not have these amazing kite features back in my day!

Interesting...makes me wonder if/when we will start seeing photos from camera drones.

Gotta love someone with the copyright name of "Nathan Invincible"!!
Great shots; keep up the good work!

Wow, all that ice! Think you all will be thawed
out by the Fourth of July? LOL!

Beautiful railing along the catwalk on the
lighthouse.

Amazing photography. Thanks, Nathan.

Spectacular photos, Nathan.

Let me guess ~ when you were a kid, somebody told you to 'go fly a kite'.;)

Hover drones are now being used in agriculture to take pictures of crops. Those are devices that have several helicopter blades on one device. You can buy a really good one for about $550 with 4 blades.
Ready to go. Mount a camera or GPS and you can do a lot of different things.

Anytime lighthouses are involved, you have my
attention. Great photos!

Tom, that sounds like the small remote helicopter-type contraption used in the filming of 'battle scenes' in the movie "Gettysburg".

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, March 17, 2014 - 08:55 am:

I heard there is a law enforcement case in Montana, where they used a drone to take pictures of a large ranch, providing the evidence they needed to prosecute the rancher. The only problem is they did not bother to get a search warrant to do that, so their so-called "evidence" will likely be thrown out.

Amazing point of view. I love this.

Once again, some outstanding photos. I think the concept of kite photography is pretty nifty. March winds bring April showers and unique pictures.

Great pictures. My Grandfather had a hand in building the Lower Entry Light and pier. When we were kids we would climb up that old Jacobsville light and throw paper plates like frisbies from the very top. I guess now you have to pay to go up for the view.

Great photos! Sure would like to see the same shots in summer.

Tom
UPGraphics.com from Newberry uses a hover drone to take videos. Their website has some great videos of the UP and there are more videos on their facebook page.

The pictures today are just amazing. I love the
winter aerial views! The area looks so different in
the winter.
