We've had a number of shoreline photos lately and it's just amazing to me, that the ice accumulation is so different on the various shorelines around the ocean-like Lake Superior. These shots today are from the Brimley area, near Sault Ste. Marie and snapped by Brenda Leigh, who loves patrolling Superior's shores.

She found quite a variety of ice sculptures right there starting with a thick coating on the stairs to the Lake level and then a neat formation with layer upon layer of ice that the sand added texture to.

The branches in the third photo, with icicles formed as the water was cascading off, give the semblance of a creature from the depths of the cold waters. Some of them even look like fingers that might be ready to grab you if you get too close. OK…so maybe I've been watching too many movies lately. ;-)

The last two photos are quite interesting. Brenda said that's a pipe in the water and in the first of the two, it looks like long hair cascading down the pipe. Brenda dubbed this one, the Queen of the Lake. The last photo is what the Queen turned into. It looks like a whale sitting there atop that pipe now or maybe a carnival ride that you'd sit in and go in circles. What a difference a couple of days and more than a few waves can make when it comes to Lake Superior ice sculpting.

#6: "Winter whale"?

Or "Cold Duck" (hunkered down in an icy cloak with bill pointing to the left)? But definitely not the sparkling wine.

Yes, that's certainly a whale! Maybe ice queen is a frozen mermaid....
