By Pat & Glenda (Gormfrog) on Sunday, December 29, 2013 - 07:54 am:

Well, it is Sunday, good for spirituality and nature readings. Not the U.P., actually desert environs is his setting...but both bring similar feelings. William Least Heat-Moon writes:

I love this cursed and sere beauty and its illusion of being the end--or the beginning of all existence, its capacity to unnerve me as I move among the scrub and visualize my bleached skeleton with only teeth to tell who I was. Go ahead, I think, cry out for help, call until no voice is left. There'll be no answer, not now, not later. This is a common dread, and so is the one that follows it: What if someone does show up? After all, I've come for this excellent forsakenness, and now I fear somebody disrupting it. One more high-desert inversion.
I should walk here in a sackcloth. Let me repent of my living too abundantly and blindly in a too easy and forgiving land and forgetting that the universe is mostly a dry, old cosmos, with wetness and life the exception. In this place scant rains fall sweet, but a walker must hunt out a spring where the water is still making its decent toward wicked lakes that will turn it to salt, where glaring alkali flats mock with mirages of fresh water and tops of stones turn saline white as if blessed with purity, but that blessing is also alkali.

Pat & Glenda, you quote a very interesting writer. (aka William Lewis Trogdon)

Shirley, yes very interesting writer...and person...think we are going to be quite cool here in south central U.P. (Stephenson) for the next few days.

I really enjoyed his book entitled, I think, "Blue Highways." I read it
many moons ago.

We leave the U.P. tomorrow morning, but tonight the stars are
shining bright in the U.P. (at least in the Ishpeming area). As
always, it is hard to say goodbye to family and the U.P.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, December 29, 2013 - 10:15 pm:

We are in the UP until Tuesday morning. It's
awfully cold today. As usual, the time has flown
and we really haven't done anything yet. Will
venture out tomorrow.

I can't get the slideshow on my kindle. Very
frustrating. We have our laptop but I think it's
about to die on us.

Have a great night everybody!

Good Job Vikings!

HAPPINESS= LIVING IN THE U.P. + ROOTING FOR THE PACKERS!

LIONS....well, they're just laughable and hopeless! Ownership...really doesn't care about it's fan base. Please sell or move the team!
