When Eric Stewart was in Copper Harbor, he hopped on the Lighthouse tour boat and headed over to check out the Lighthouse in person. The tour they were on was the last of the day, so it was the sunset trip and that's how he was able to snap today's first shot, looking into the Harbor from the entrance buoy, with the beacon light shining. What a different perspective!

Eric's next view is from the foot of the tower that houses the Lighthouse beacon, looking back toward Copper Harbor and the third shot, shows how small the Queen looks alongside one of those mighty freighters. I'm not sure which one it is, perhaps one of our "resident boat nerds" can identify the freighter, but in Eric's photo, it looks like the Queen is chasing it down. :->

That's today's photographer himself, in the last photo. It's not often we get to see the face behind the camera, so I thought it would be fun to be able to say hi to Eric in person (so to speak). Thanks for the Lighthouse tour, Eric!

Great shots! Thanks Eric!

By MarilynnB (Marilynnb) on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 09:11 am:

Great shots, thanks! Is there a way to get to the lighthouse
by land? We've driven all around the area and can't figure
out how to get there.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 09:14 am:

I agree with Dunerat, Eric ~ I especially like the shot of the freighter and the Queen!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 10:07 am:

Bob & I have done the freighter chasing from the Queen a few times, a must do!!!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 10:08 am:

BTW, Mary, I'm a 'boatnerd' but the only thing I can determine is that it's a 'footer' (1,000ft.). The stack looks to be the American Steamship Co.

I love the angle of the first photo; I had never seen the Copper Harbor entrance buoy before. Thanks, Eric and Mary.

Nice pics, Eric...you go Buoyeeeeeee!

By Sharon I. Smith (Sharons) on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 01:28 pm:

FYI, there is a road to the lighthouse, but it is a private road, and some of the homeowners on it get quite bent out of shape when anyone tries to use it to get to the lighthouse. You can't drive all the way anyway; there is a gate at the entrance to the DNR land.

Check this out everyone...Devin Seppala sent this photo our way, in conjunction with today's photos. It seems that Devin may have been snapping this photo from on board the Queen, the same time that Eric Stewart was snapping his photo from the land. What are the chances of that? :-)
Thanks for sharing, Devin (and Lindsay, too)!

Freighter chasing on the Queen

the entrance buoy appears to have illuminated
signs on it. if true -- what is the power
source -- solar charged cells? or could it
just be reflections of a flash camera?

Mary says: My guess is the reflection of the flash from the camera, George.

By Allan Timonen (Altim) on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 02:20 pm:

my girlfriend and i were on the queen that evening, the sunset wasnt much due to the clouds but the dock jumping and pulling up along side of the Mesabi Miner made it a great evening.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 02:20 pm:

Pretty awesome if these two people were aboard the Queen at the same time! I can't say it enough freighter chasing aboard the Queen is a must do! The summer Bob & I were aboard the Queen chasing down the Masabi Miner, this poor guy dropped his camera into Lake Superior, never to be seen again....

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, September 10, 2013 - 02:44 pm:

With that closer shot it's easy to see that Allan's right ~ the Mesabi Miner with its black and orange stack of the Interlake Steamship Co.
Allan and Devin, that's what I call 'up close and personal'!:)

Good pics. Love lighthouses.

Charlie, today we received our ocpy of Steve Brimm's "Copper Harbor" and it is spectacular to say the least. The memories that were brought back to us is overwhelming. The Lady of The Pines, the copper door on the Harbor Haus, Hebard Park, Brockway, the Pines, Lake Fanny Hoe, and the Devils Washtub brought some small tears to our eyes.
This winter when we sit down to enjoy a Pasty from the Hut we will remember.
Thanks for letting us know that this was available to us.
We now live permanently in Florids and due to health reasons our chances of seeing first hand the sites and sounds of the Keweenaw are slim but with the help of these photos and Pasty Central, we will remain close to God's Country.

Wow! In the 15 years I have been watching the Pasty Cam and the 8 years I lived in the UP I never got to see pics from these vantage points. Oh how I wanted to! Quite frankly, I never even knew you could go over to the Copper Harbor Lighthouse until after I moved. However, I especially loved the pics from and of the Queen. The pic of the buoy was great too! Thanks for the pics!
