While staying at a camp in Bootjack recently, Ryan Byykkonen was busy documenting the various moths he spotted around the grounds. The only one that I can identify confidently is the first one, as a luna moth, which is actually one of the largest moths in North America. I'm not sure how big this fella that Ryan captured is, but they can have a wingspan of up to 4.5 inches. That's bigger than some birds!

The next two photos are a mystery, at least to me. They sure are interesting creatures and beautiful in their own way, too. I'm fairly certain the second one is a moth and quite intricate with a bit of color and so many markings, too. It almost looks furry in the photo.
Then the last one, I'm leaning more towards a butterfly, than a moth, but what do I know. ;-) Whatever it is, it sure is a beautiful specimen and pretty trusting to have stayed on Ryan's helpers finger so he could move in for a good look.

Thank's for taking us up close to nature at its best, Ryan!

You're right, the last one is a butterfly. For one
reason, compare the antenna of it and the luna moth.
Not quite sure of the type of butterfly; will have
to go check that out.

Well, Mary, I know the last one is a butterfly and the 2nd one a moth, but I'm not sure what kind. I asked my nature loving husband, but even he didn't know the identity. Maybe after work, if the question hasn't been answered, I can google it. But I'm pretty confident that somebody on this site will have the answer!

Love these photos!

HIDE YOUR CLOTHES (except the ones you're wearing)! THE MOTHS ARE COMING! Still fine photos.

Would love identification on the second two as
well.

The second moth might be a Copper Underwing moth.
Hard to tell there are so many similar ones out
there.

Not sure on the butterfly.

The only times I have ever seen Luna moths were on
Drummond Island (seem to be hanging on the cabin
walls every time I go there). And they sure grow
'em BIG up there!

That luna moth is so unique! After taking another look, couldn't help but notice the paisley-shaped "eyes" on its wings.
God certainly has an awesome 'palate' with which to 'paint' these beautiful creatures.:)

I had to get help from my "Field Guide to Butterflies" to determine that the butterfly is an Eyed Brown.
