Bob Gilreath and entourage were recently in the Iron Mountain area and stopped at the Pine Mountain Ski Jump. Of course you can't just "stop" there without making the climb up to the top, right? So that's just what they did.

When you look at the pictures he took of the structure from the distance, it looks impressive, but the shots looking directly up the steps and then down again, sure give you a good perspective of the height those skiers take off from for the ski jump competitions that are held there. Especially Bob's first photo...it looks like you are going right up into that cloud at the top. Pretty spectacular!

Some great photos today. I walked to the top in
the 50s. When I look at it now it looks like it would take all day to get up there.People have a lot of nerve to go down that shute.

Great photos, thank you Bob!

You have to climb the slide to appreciate how tall it really is and how far you are above the ground at the base of the hill. The fourth photo, "The descent" gives you an idea of what the jumpers see from up on the slide. There's the end of the ramp, that little bit of solid ground, and then just a yawning void until the outrun of the landing. You can't see the landing zone; for all you can tell at the top, it might as well just be a vertical cliff. Those jumpers have some serious guts!

The Pine Mountain Ski Jump brings back indelible memories. Grandma lived over near Bass Lake, and the sight of Pine Mountain and the jump structure in profile is permanently etched in my consciousness. The structure has been rebuilt since I was a kid and it looks different now. But it's all good.

In the last picture, it looks like the jump is pointing down the stairway on the right instead of the landing area.
