The two photos here today, from Frank Jezek and Donna MacIntosh, respectively, illustrate the weather we've been getting here in the North Country lately. Still plenty of snow on the ground and even some still hanging on to the branches. We have blue skies and sunshine that makes the snow glisten and sparkle and gives us hope of better weather...then a few hours later, there's another 6" of more of snow covering the ground again. It's like the weather can't make up its mind.

I think I speak for the majority of the residents here UP North, when I say that we've had enough, we cry uncle! It's the middle of April and we're more than ready for Spring. Could someone please pass on the message?

Isn't it amazing how the time of year impacts our opinions of the weather?

Beautiful scenes, but you're right, most of us are saying "enough already!!!" Let the melting (and not flooding) begin!

My heart goes out to you Mary, Frank, and Donna, 'cause we're having 60s and 70s down our way....flowers, bushes and trees blooming.:)

The lawn here in NW Illinois is thick and green. Been able to sit quietly on the patio, altho with a light jacket on. The cat is soaking up sun rays, but here on the living room carpet. But back to chilly and windy tomorrow.

I think these are beautiful pictures! Especially because it is UP in the U.P! Sorry ;)

I'm curious to know if the snowmobile season has been extended? Seriously I hope the U.P. will be Blessed with Spring and all her beauty comes soon!

There's an old Finnish saying (and I have no clue on the Finn words) but it basically means "The New Snow is the Death of the Old Snow"...so we HAVE to have new snow to melt the old. And it's working. I can see bare ground around the bases of the trees around here...Spring is on it's way...it's just battling Old Man Winter back. He's hanging on a lil' harder this year, but Spring WILL win!

15" of new snow yesterday and last night in Evergreen,CO. More expected today and tomorrow. But with our summer wildfire problems, I am not complaining

"Heikki Lunta Go Away"

David Riutta created "Heikki Lunta" (the name
translates to Hank Snow in English) in 1970. When
an upcoming snowmobile race hosted by the Range
Snowmobile Club of Atlantic Mine, Michigan was
endangered by the lack of snowfall, Riutta, a
worker at WMPL in Hancock, aired the "Heikki Lunta
Snowdance Song." The song goes on to ask "Heikki
Lunta," the Finnish snow god, for snow in time for
the race. According to local tales, the snow fell
and fell, until there was too much. People were
superstitious that Riutta's song had caused too
much snow for the race, so in response to public
outcry, Riutta recorded a separate track entitled,
"Heikki Lunta Go Away." The 45 showcased each song
on alternate sides."

I moved to Duluth this winter, and this morning shoveled through shoulder-high drifts on the walkway after Sunday's snowfall. It's not the inches, it's the drifting that makes it so hard. I haven't seen it snow without 40 mph winds. Some of the drifts in the lee of buildings are still eight feet high. Heikki Lunta, take a break already!
Some friends called this April 'sprinter': neither spring or winter.

They are great photos, thank you. Mary, maybe it would help spring come faster if you post some spring flower photos, like crocus or daffodils or tulips, or something, even if you have to cheat and use some from last year? It would show us what should be here very soon, anyway, and, I'm only half teasing.

Duluth is absolutely beautiful when it is "colored",
no longer "white"! I miss sitting on the rocks of
Enger Tower and watching the "Big Lake". I used to
go there on my lunch break to enjoy the "best" of
the Great Lakes! Brighton Beach just outside of
Lester Park/Lakeside area is also wonderful for the
soul. Hawk's Ridge, 7 Bridges Road...enjoy!

I am okay with winter winding down but I would not mind visiting the UP to see this snow in person.

We have that very 45 of the Heikki Lunta songs in
our collection. A true classic!

Laure: Thanks for the information. I am a new member of the Benedictine monastery on the hillside above Duluth, and while we have a nice view of the Lake beyond Chester Park,I haven't seen much except the medical center downtown, and almost nothing outside of town. When the driving is better maybe I can sign out a car and see some waterfalls. I did see Gooseberry Falls the day after I arrived, all frozen and lovely, but haven't left town since except to fly to Detroit for a funeral.

I was told by my mother that I was born on a blizzardly day, April 23rd 1948, so snow this late is not that unusual in the Copper Country!

The first 21 years of my life was spent in Calumet. I now reside in Florida during the winter. It's getting hot down here and we will soon be heading north to Bellaire where we now live. There's snow there too I hear. I'll bring some heat with me on May 10th, OK? Hang in there. I did for a long time and I know all of you can too.
