This morning I've been scouring the archives, trying to find one of the first action-shots we published on pasty.com, a couple of years before we started the Daily Pasty Cam. It was Eldon Jones, on his knees in front of a gas stove, lighting the pilot (in one of the cabins at Gitche Gumee). That was before we even had a digital camera. We'll post it if I find it later.

If you've ever been to the Bible Camp in Eagle River, you have seen a very well-kept facility that has required a lot of manpower to keep it that way. One of those volunteers for many years has been Eldon Jones, experienced in plumbing and electrical, who brought his family from Stanton, Michigan to the U.P. for many summers, long before the Mackinac Bridge made it easier to get here. Little more than a week ago Eldon passed the 100 year mark, and yesterday at Gitche Gumee his friends and family gathered to honor him at this milestone.

The top photo must have been around 80 years ago, Eldon being the guy on the right, sitting on the hood next to a young lady identified as Grace Williams (don't know about the other couple). The entrance to Gitche Gumee was quite a few years later, judging by the tail lights, and the Fort Wilkins sign must have been a visit in the 70's with his wife Esther.

It was a pleasant visit with Eldon yesterday at the Dining Hall, filled with his children and grand-children, church family, camp workers, and folks from the surrounding community. May we all be as blessed at 100 !

Have a good week :o)

Happy Birthday, Mr. Jones! God bless you!

How interesting it would be to have a conversation with Mr. Jones about all the events he lived in his past 100 years! Especially on WWII. May your 100th year bring you joy and health Mr. Jones! I'm in love with the Studebaker!!

What a heart warming story, Charlie. How lovely to hold this special
celebration at a place so dear to Eldon Jones' heart.

I believe that station wagon is a 1962 Chevy Bel Air, not sure what that is to the right of it.

dane, that's the '62-'63 Studebaker I'm in love with.

Happy 100th Birthday, Eldon! That is quite an achievement to make it to the century mark! May you enjoy it in good health.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, March 24, 2013 - 07:02 pm:

You take the Studebaker, Janie, I'll take the Chevy. The last car my daddy owned was a green and white '62 Bel Air sedan, and when he passed away in 1993, it was still in mint condition.

It sounds like Eldon has blessed many folks directly
and indirectly over his 100 years. May we all be
able to say that, not matter how many years we tarry
here on Earth!

Happy Birthday Eldon!
