The snow here in the Keweenaw, continues to fall, which is nothing out of the ordinary, since this is the U.P. and it is January. When the snow keeps falling for days at a time, it turns the landscape into a winter wonderland as today's photos from Judy Byykkonen show. She gives us a look at the snow gathered on the branches and even coating the tree nymph in her yard. I bet you never thought you'd have to "stow away" your tire swing for the snowy months, but Judy makes sure hers isn't swaying back and forth in the winter winds, by tucking it snugly between the trunks of the trees in her yard.

Just a short distance from Judy's front yard, is the Traprock River, which takes on a completely different look in each and every season. Each one beautiful in its own unique way and winter is one of the finest, in my opinion. You can't see the water, since it's frozen over and snow covered, but I bet it's still flowing underneath the surface ice. Yes, there is much beauty to be found in the winter months UP North

Very nice pics and of course, you would find a spare tire in the trunk :-)

Hopefully that "winter wonderland" continues into next week; I haven't seen any real snow since our summer trip to Norway.....

Very nice photos, especially the last one. Alex, you are a comic genius.

Interesting photos, but I'm sick of snow. Got lots of it down here last night and a temp. of 9F this a.m. to go with it.:( Hope old "Phil" doesn't see his shadow tomorrow!

Picture #1, that tree definitely has had it's lips injected with botox!

Capt Paul If that is your car while in Norway please tell me why the snow banks are so clean. Any banks like that that I've ever seen were lined with black "strata".

The road is not open during the winter - therefore no sand is applied for traction. Opened up with a "snowgo" in early summer; I'm assuming.

You know it's been a long winter when you start to see trees making faces at you. No need to worry though until you start to make faces back.

Winter wonderland.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, February 1, 2013 - 03:04 pm:

lol, I'm almost to that point, Gary, because of my trees dropping so many limbs in these winds and snow.;)

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, February 1, 2013 - 03:34 pm:

The snowbanks are that clean Richard because of the reason fy1 pointed out; they don't use any salt/sand on that road. But, contrary to what fy1 said, that road IS open year-around. There is an enormous dam at the top that is holding a glacial lake back (photo below). The Norwegian Government has a monitoring station at the edge to monitor lake levels and weather information. We never saw what they used to keep it open, but I can imagine it is some sort of large snow blower like a Sno-Go or something similar.

And yes, that was our rental car in Norway/Sweden/Finland over the summer, an Audi A4 Quattro we named "Sven the Swedish Audi"!!
