Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 07:58 am:

The Marquette and surrounding areas had a quick storm this past Friday, some places getting pelted with ping pong size hail, I heard. There was some advance warning from the skies, though and Mike Schneider had his camera at the ready, to capture those fast moving clouds. Pretty ominous looking, especially the dark ones in the bottom photo. Mike said he snapped that one, looking south at the intersection of West Washington and McClellan Ave. in Marquette. You can see the eerie, yellowish tint in the photo and combined with those dark clouds, that's a sure sign that some bad weather is coming soon.

I hope Mike made it to safety and kept his camera dry, before the storm hit!

For some reason, when I view these photos, AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" comes to mind.....

Great shots, Mike!!

I can hear Johnny Cash singing Ghost Riders in the Sky......

...and Bruce Springsteen's "The Promised Land"

Cool pics!

Marshall Tucker's, I'm searchin for a rainbow!

I'd rather see "Blue Skies, Smiling At Me".....these photos scare me. :( Have seen way too many of them this year! But I have to admit, those are good shots, Mike!

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 09:20 am:

Even as a young kid I always loved the exciting anticipation of the yellow/greenish sky before a storm! I miss our front porch where you could be outside but still safe from the downpour. Still cautious of the lightning tho.

By Paul H. Meier (Paul) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 09:53 am:

Down here we worry about nature's vacuum cleaners (tornadoes)when we see a front like that.

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 10:44 am:

Fantastic photos today. I've always heard that green skies can mean conditions are ripe for a tornado. Sounds like there's only some evidence supporting this. This article also offers a possible explanation for what causes the green color. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=fact-or-fiction-if-sky-is-green-run-for-cover-tornado-is-coming

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 11:22 am:

Good article, Lisa!
Lots of informitive data and food for thought.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 11:25 am:

Sisugirl, matters not to me whether it's green, gray, black, I 'run for cover'. ;) But I have seen 'green' skies before a terrific storm hits.

By Maria Sturos (Mrsturos) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 03:16 pm:

That oncoming storm sky picture reminds me of a 3X5 index card pasted on the inside cover of my deceased Aunt's old black recipe box on "How to Foretell the Weather". "When you see your dog or cat more than ordinarily restless, frisking about the house in all directions, be assured that some boisterous weather will shortly succeed. "In summer, when the atmosphere is dense and heavy, and there is scarcely a breath of air, be assured that a thunder-storm is coming on".

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 03:43 pm:

It's clouded up in northwestern lower Michigan as I write this. We may be in 4 something before the day's over.

By Therese (Therese) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 04:59 pm:

It just poured buckets here near Harbor Springs for about 10 minutes. Does anyone remember the Green Storm of June 1980? The storm was 10 miles wide with linear winds estimated at 125 mph, and cut a path 200 miles long across southern Michigan and into Ontario. Before the storm the sky was boiling and pea green. Never saw that color again, even in tornado skies. The barameter at work dropped to around 28 inches.

No matter what they bring I still think thunder storm clouds are beautiful.

By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 08:32 pm:

Storm clouds are the best.

!0 PM and thanks goodness that irriatating Stanley Cup nonsense must be FINALLY Over!! They are showing guys walking around with some big silver cup above their heads. Now if we can get rid of that tennis thing thats hogged the tv I'll be ever so grateful. Are some of you guys happy now???

By Paul H. Meier (Paul) on Monday, June 11, 2012 - 11:35 pm:

Mskatie,
Cheer up, it'll get worse. You have the NBA finals, Whimbleton, the US Open, and the entire Olympic games to watch in the next 2 months. Followed by the ever exciting political conventions! Those will be followed by the ever entertaining political ads. The Stanley Cub wasn't so bad in retrospect.

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 - 08:19 am:

Hi
I didn't care about either of the teams---except I feel a hockey team from a place that doesn't have winter is wrong, so I sorta supported the New Jersey Devils---but it still was more entertaining than the other broadcast offerings on TV last night, at least for me.

We need rain here downstate but mostly did not get it yesterday; only some sprinkles.

Me too! Phoenix (AZ) Coyotes? Ye gods, that's just not right!

Are Mondays' storm clouds affecting Tuesdays' Pasty cam presentation?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 - 09:07 pm:

Those are some great shots! We have some like that taken out here too. In fact, we had a canvas print made out of one of them and have it hanging on our wall. No doubt, storm cloud pictures are the best!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, June 14, 2012 - 07:05 pm:

Paul, you cracked me up with the cheering up speech you gave to Kay. That was awesome! And Kay, perhaps you should invest in a DVD player to watch some movies.

I wasn't interested in either team since the Wings weren't in it, but was pulling for the Kings since they'd never win it and they were the underdogs in every series they played. Kind of like to see that, unless it's the Wings they're beating, lol. I'll take hockey finals over NBA finals any day of the week!

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Friday, June 15, 2012 - 12:28 pm:

FRNash, I didn't mean to run down the Phoenix Coyotes. It was purely arbitrary on my part, like the way some folks don't like hockey teams, (like the Red Wings) with Europeans on the roster.

I never thought you did, 'twas solely my opinion: Hockey in the Arizona Desert? Crazy! Ditto for hockey teams in Louisiana, and Texas! <grin>

Thank you for the comments! This past week has brought some cool clouds, rain and wind and some really nice sunsets!
