If you live here or frequently visit Michigan’s northern Peninsula (or if you've been following the weather we've been having) you know we're experiencing a crazy winter here UP North. It's not like we haven't had any storms, we've had a number of them drop inches upon inches, even feet in some instances. But then we've been getting a warm spell shortly afterwards, and it melts a good portion of the snow that accumulates from each storm. Today's photo from Frederic W. Koski, was taken after one of the recent storms showing the beauty of the untouched snow that has fallen and covered the landscape. If you stop and quietly listen, I bet you'll be able to hear the sounds of this winter scene... first the crisp, cold quietness, and then... the chirping of birds, the plunk of snow falling off the trees and finally the crunch, crunch, crunch of Frederic's snowshoes as he continues his winter hike. Enjoy!

Frederick Koski's photo and Mary's description make for a very peaceful setting. The shadows and sunlight on the snow are interesting, too. :-)

I am there...in behind that tallest spruce tree.
Thanks Fred and Mary. What a serene photo.

WINTER...
There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you.... In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself. ~Ruth Stout

And yes..this is one weird winter...the bay down here in Baraga doesn't have ice yet....I've been asking folks if they remember the bay not freezing, and they all stop to think, but then it's "Yeah...I do"....and one gal told me some guy was out water skiing in his Santa suit!

As of last week, we had less than an inch of frost in the ground down here in SE Michigan, I doubt the total snow accumulation is greater than 6" in the metro region... This pic gives me a desperately needed fix for winter. One of the best places we have found to enjoy this type of snowfall and snowshoeing is in and around Mandan. Just trying to visualize what the place may have looked like in it's short-lived heyday is tough, only three or four houses remain, as silent witnesses to many, many winters in the Keweenaw.

I'm going to post info re: the giant copper...if you don't agree..please just skip this....thanks.

Dear Friends of AAPS,

Glenn and I have been working with a new foundation who is VERY interested in our goals and in helping to save the 28.5 ton, largest-in-the-world pure (99.9% pure) "float" copper. (and of the future museum too!)

They are SO interested they have pledged....drum roll..... $150,000!
AND they will match any pledge of $1,000 or more.

This will help move us to our VERY NEAR DEADLINE of March 27th, 2012.

Also, if you have made a pledge already, it's time for us to call in those pledges to be paid by the first week of March. Please check on the website if you don't recall your pledge amount. See http://www.aaapf.org/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=66 to check.

Remember, our bank accounts may not be as high as you would think, as we had to pay out over $6,000 toward getting the copper moved to Marquette for greater visibility to raise funds.

Accounting (close estimates...could be higher when we see our treasurer's details)
Unrefundable Paid down - $ 10,000
Our pledges total $171,470 (Not yet including future "matching" donors)
Our donations $ 6,000 (donations for copper fund, and Buy-the-Pound "sales" total nearly $13,000 in the bank)
Our "Buy Pounds" = $ 7,000
Total pledges/donations $194,470

We owe $340,000, less $194,470= $145,530 balance due

Will YOU help us make the deadline?

Please phone, send a check by mail, make a pledge, go to the website....
do SOMETHING - big or small- to indicate your willingness to help.

We will create a way to honor donors who wish to be acknowledged at our eventual museum...or perhaps with the copper itself. Those are details to be worked out...but FIRST save that beautiful copper! ) Fred will be sooo happy to know we will have fulfilled his dream!

THANK YOU VERY MUCH
for previous support and for your new considerations as we near the end.

Love, Judy and Glenn, and all your AAPS board and committee members,

Beautiful scene! And, Mary, I've heard all those wonderful sounds you described. Beauty doesn't have to be a 'sight' but can also a 'sound'! Thank you Frederic, for the pictures, and thank you Mary, for your words!
A sunny morning here in Bethel, but 18F out my backdoor.

The dark green trees, the purest white snow , the dark clouds and the sun all in one picture perfect UP day.

to Les Hendrickson, regarding yesterday's question.
I graduated from LL in 1951, my wife Nancy graduated
in 1955. Neither of us knew your wife Carolyn,
although the Kahler name is familiar.
