I'm not at all certain where the Tobacco River starts, but I DO know where she empties into Lake Superior, northeast of the little hamlet called Gay, MI. Marv and Ellie Hopf have a 'home away from home' out near the mouth, so they're able to keep an eye on the melting progress the river is making each time they head out to check on things. The top shot makes one think it'll be awhile before we get to see water rushing down into Superior. Then you check out the bottom shot and you can definitely see signs of the waters beginning to flow at a greater rate, breaking the way through the ice on the rush to join the Big Lake!

Beautiful shots! Thanks for a great way to start the day! By the sounds of the forecasts there may be a couple days with that snow melting a bit faster!

By Tim, Saint Clair Shores, MI on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 05:52 am:

On every U.P. trip, I like to stop and take a few photos of the Tobacco River. Another gem of the U.P.

By Mike K, North Sea soon home to Laurium on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 06:03 am:

I believe the Tobacco starts at Thayer Lake. Rumor has it that Trout Unlimited was going to try and clean up the river (remove deadfalls and such) to help improve the habitat. And just think, in a month, that river mouth will be swarming with anglers hoping to catch that elusive steelhead...

By smf in troll land on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 06:45 am:

Thanks for the great pictures!

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 06:56 am:

Super shots. Looks like spring is coming.

By Sarah, Stuck in Ohio on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 07:29 am:

I sure wish I was passing the Tobacco River on my way to Little Betsy now! Unfortunately I have to wait 4 more months!

By Alex Tiensivu, Georgia on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 08:20 am:

What a nice way to start a new day... Those pix are just awesome. Mouth watering!

By Dave,Laurium on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 08:31 am:

Great shots of one of my favorite spots,.... even in the winter!! I took a little jaunt to 'Breakies' the other day, thought maybe the 'shallow' side might be warm enough for a dip, but alas, to my chagrin, that was not the case, but here is a shot of the lighthouse and some of the ice there...a few more monts till the first plunge....
Breakies

The fourth of July parade at Gay......but don't tell the tourists......Locals only....LOLOLOL

By Sarah, Central WI on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 08:43 am:

The beauty of Lake Superior always takes my breath away. Thanks!

By Norma in Midland on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 08:47 am:

Sarah Stuck in Ohio, Let's leave now. We can have the fire burning by dinner time. :) Have a good day!

By Gus LL on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 09:40 am:

I fished the Tobacco River several miles up stream from the mouth in the 1950's & 60's. It was a good brook trout stream then. Now about all there are is chubs & small rainbow.trout. I haven't fished it for about 30 years. Maybe it has changed since then. The steelhead still run up the river in the spring. Wont be long now. Nice pics Marv & Ellie

Sring is really here! I just saw my first Robin!!! There it was sitting in a tree in my front yard. I'm so happy.

By RCW on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 12:02 pm:

Hey Cindy I agree, we saw our first one here in $ Bay this morning YIPEE!!!!!

By Rachel, wishing she was boating out to Keystone Bay on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 01:40 pm:

Norma,

Is it too cold to bring the boats? Mom and Dad just bought us one to share and I can't wait to get it out on the lake!

By Barb Michigan on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 02:00 pm:

Oh wow! How I wish I was up there looking at the beautiful yoop. Someday I'll be moving up for good and I cannot wait.

By Jamie/Merrill on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 03:50 pm:

I would"nt miss the Gay parade for anything and I am not a local--but I sure love it!!!! Quite a "happening"

By Mr.Bill on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 04:19 pm:

Spring MUST be here ....

Two small fishing boats went out into Superior from Lac La Belle about an hour apart this afternoon. Superior is breaking white caps on the shore.

Think I'll thaw out some Mrs. Paul's fish sticks for now.

By Jerald, Westland on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 04:35 pm:

Wish I was there....but, have to head to Washington, D.C. to perform an audit on a gov't agency. I do get to see the cherry blossoms, though. By the way, for everyone I didn't get to talk to this weekend - Happy belated Easter!

By Norma in Midland on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 04:47 pm:

Rachel, YES!! We can take them, however, it would be a rough ride. Hopefully we can boat together this summer.

By Helen on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 04:57 pm:

Two beautiful shots Marv and Elle. The scene is just breathtaking. Little cold for dipping into it yet. Just like to sit and watch the calm out there.

By Stix out West on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 05:23 pm:

Does anyone know if Keweenaw Bay is open or is it still frozen over?? How about the Houghton Canal??
Can't wait to get on the beach but would rather put my toes in warm sand than frozen snow!!
Looks like Spring has Sprung up there!

By Paul on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 06:03 pm:

Wow this year! All wet is getting ready to break loose . 24" of semi frozen water justawantin to go some place. Take a walk through the "snow" today. Must be 1 to 2 cuft. of water per sq foot of earth . Get the pumps out!

By Shirley - Lower Michigan on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 06:07 pm:

We, too, always go up to the Gay parade - it's so much fun. Pictures today are awesome - used to live right there at the Tobacco River as a child. Brings back wonderful memories.

By Resident of Gay, MI on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 07:43 pm:

Gay Parade - The little hamlet of Gay, MI would appreciate any participants to walk in the parade in 2005. In recent years, the number of parade walkers and themes has dwindled. So, if you like to join the fun instead of being a spectator, you are more than welcome to! :-) It is hard to believe the the Fourth of July is only about 3 months away...

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 07:51 pm:

If we plan our vacation right, the old boy and I will be near Gay for the 4th.

By Stix out West on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 09:37 pm:

Maybe the "Jacobsville Kids" will have to make an appearance at the Gay parade this year! Can't wait! Only problem is that there is too much time between the Lake Linden and Gay parades! Such problems to have!!!!

By SarahK, MI troll in FL on Tuesday, March 29, 2005 - 09:38 pm:

Somehow "the mouth of the tobacco river" doesn't sound pleasant to me.

By bobtiura on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 - 12:01 am:

Colin Murphy, Michigan Tech forward, finished first in the final fan balloting for the 25th Hobey Baker Award. Congratulations, Colin! The final award will factored with the votes from a 25 member committee and will be announced at the awards banquet on Friday, April 8, prior to the final day game of the NCAA playoffs. Watch for it on your local Fox Sports network. Hope you make the final cut, Colin.

By sur5er on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 - 02:03 am:

Jerald,

Have a safe trip to Washington D.C...and have fun with that audit. :)

By calumet kid on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 - 09:53 am:

hello everyone

By Meggie of MI on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 - 05:25 pm:

Dave of Laurium, only couldn't take a dip because of the icebergs, not because of the water temp, right??
