Three billy goats    ...scroll down to share comments

Mary Drew at Pasty Central on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 04:38 am:

Struttin’ down the road without a care in the world and it looks as if the dogs behind these traveling goats could care less. Then again, Sherry Giacoletto, could just be taking these critters out for their daily walk! Looking closely at the picture you can see that each of them have some type of collar on, so it’s entirely possible you could hook up a leash and walk the goat. I wonder if there are any bridges in the vicinity, with trolls living underneath? If so, I hope they let the billy goats pass over to the other side!

For any visitors who are scratching their heads, thinking Mary Drew has gone bonkers…I’m making reference to the old tale of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. ;->

MORNIN' ALL!

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 04:50 am:

Hey, Troll, will you be home this evening? We need to finish that work on the wireless access point at the store.

By the way, we hope soon to have an access point just around the corner from today's picture, overlooking the Torch Lake valley, all the way from Lake Linden to Dollar Bay.

A very nice blue-sky U.P. scene. Good picture.

By maijaMi on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 06:39 am:

Wonderful timeless picture. People could have seen this same scene a hundred and fifty years ago. Lovely, peaceful scene. Thanks Sherry

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 06:48 am:

You know, we had a story of goats getting out and getting into town around here. You don't think they were this bunch's relatives do you?

By Janet, Ohio on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 06:59 am:

Good morning, cute picture.

Good Morning All, have a wonderful day and indeed on the cute picture.

By BT,TC on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 08:12 am:

I love this picture! My poor Daisy Mae (pygmy goat) died just about a year ago on a cold snowy winters day....it was pretty sad...she was a lot of fun!

By Barb Nelson, Jacobsville, MI on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 08:22 am:

Hey Sherry, great shot! Keep 'em coming!

By Wayne, Grand Haven on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 08:35 am:

Just as a note, there are a lot of people using goats as pack animals. Grown castrated male dairy goats can carry about 50 pounds, do almost no damage to trails, follow along with out a lead, and are great companions. Do a search on packgoats, it is very interesting. These look to be pygmy goats and wouldn't likely be be used as packers, but still nice to take with you as a compaion.

By Sarah, Central WI on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 08:49 am:

Great picture Sherry! Thanks!

By Carolyn, AZ on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 09:17 am:

Hey great shot Sherry. Hi from the Grand Canyon. This is Carolyn (Hurlburt) Spoehr. That road looks familiar. Let me hear from you.

Looks like cruchy snow...must be about 20 below in that picture.

By Dick Barclay - Down on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 10:18 am:

I met Admiral Bursey who had been on one of the explorations to the south pole with Admiral Byrd through my wife's family in Shelby, MI around 1971. He talked of harnessing a goat to a wooden dog sled in Newfoundland in his youth to pull him around his home village. I remember him in his retirement making wooden dogsleds without any metal except for under the runners (they were pegged and lashed I believe with rawhide) and he sold them to mushers throughout North America. He showed me souvenirs collected from around the world during his military career.

By Cate- UP of Michigan, of course! on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 10:46 am:

Hi Sherry,
I love the dialog generated by your neat photo. I have 2
pygmy goats and actually do take them for walks in
Chassell along with my miniature stallion (31 inches tall)
and 2 llamas. We have a riot. The goats in particular are
very entertaining and sweet. Nothin' like goat antics to
make a person laugh!
Cheers, Cate

By sur5er, Indiana on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 11:20 am:

Cate,

I bet your walking adventures with your pets causes passerbyers to smile. I got a chuckle just from the visual of the goats, stallion, and llamas going for their daily walk down the county road. :)

Where's the sheperd? Hi EH Troll! Have missed you. Sounds like some good news about Mo?

By Michelle Mills, Seminole FL on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 12:57 pm:

Now THAT'S a scene we don't find in Florida every day!!! However, the sky looks just as sunny, and robin's egg blue. I just love the photos posted here. I check it every day. I'm originally from Fort Wayne, IN, and we used to vacation in Curtis MI in the UP each summer when I was a child. I enjoy checking in and seeing how things are in your neck of the woods. Blessings to you!

By Sandy Texas on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 02:15 pm:

Hi all....The goats in the picture look kind of chubby compared to many here in Texas. I guess for the warmth? A friend of mine here just had "14" baby goats born in the last 2 weeks! He's a busy feller these days! Love this site and beautiful pictures! (waiting for my pasties, be here today or tomorrow)...Have a great day!

By Sue, Calumet on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 02:22 pm:

Are we the only ones that had a cantankerous goat? There was nothing sweet about his nature, although he was pretty funny to watch. He charged every living creature that happened past. He ate every leaf on the tree he was tied to, within the sphere of his tether, even if it meant climbing the tree to do it. Never underestimate a goat.

By Paul on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 03:02 pm:

goat figure.

Michelle in Seminole Fl. Hi! I also used to live in Indiana (South Bend and Bloomington) and now reside in Florida - Orlando. I also vacationed in the UP as a child and still love to today. I must admit the weather here is nice in the winter, but I still miss the winters I actually lived in the Keweenaw. Another round of thanks to all those at pasty.com who bring us these wonderful pictures each and every day. I hope it never stops!

By John, Almont, MI on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 04:39 pm:

There was a great Johnny Carson skit involving Karnak the Magnificent....

Karnak: (Holding envelope to his forehead) "The answer is 'Ziss, boom, bah!'"

Karnak: (Tearing open the enveolpe) "What is the sound of an exploding sheep (goat)?"

By Fran,Ga on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 07:14 pm:

Mary, thanks for the link to the story about the Three Billy Goats Gruff. When I was in Kindegarten Mrs St John used to read us that story and we would act it out. Our little green chairs made the bridge. Anyone from $Bay remember that? It sure was a pretty day that photo was taken.

By Urban Escapee, MI on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 - 10:21 pm:

This cute pic and comments gave me my chuckle of the day. Thanks.
Hey Charlie, was that you up on the VFW tower on Sunday around 1:00?

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 - 02:36 am:

Yes, Urb, that was me. What a beautiful day to be on one of the highest points in the Peninsula! I could actually see all the way to Manitou Island, with a breathtaking view of the Cliffs, Mt. Horace Greeley, Mt. Bohemia, and Mt. Houghton gracing the rim of the Keweenaw Valley. Back in the fall I made a short video (windows media) while climbing the tower, which is on the north side of Calumet/Laurium.

Charlie:
I had no idea there were so many moutains up yonder. The only I ever knew of was Brockway Mt. See, you do learn something new every day. When others have spoken of Mt.Gratiot, Mt. Houghton and Mt. Boehma I had no idea where they were located. Now I do. Thanks for the map.

HECK YEAH there's a bridge with trolls under it. It's the BIG MACK!! All the trolls live under that one....it's us Yoopers above it!

By Kathy Ptaszek on Tuesday, February 1, 2005 - 08:10 pm:

Hey Sherry,
Would these be the goats that danced on the hood of my Chevy Lumina when they were but kids? I still chuckle when I think of you running around my car trying to chase the little tap dancers down. Ha. Cute.
