If you're looking for some interesting winter formations, but don't want to brave the elements, all you need do is click on over to Joyce Tormala's winter gallery. She's done all the hard work for us, trekking through the knee deep snow, so we can sit back in the warmth of our abodes and enjoy. Those have got to be some strong sunflower stems pictured here. First, to be just holding up the heavy sunflower head, but then in addition, the bonnet of snow they've acquired lately makes them that much heavier. It's hard to tell for sure, but perhaps there's still a few seeds left for the birds to get their winter nourishment ;o)

there in June this past year. The Lupine was amazing! Each
journey north reveals new splendors to me.

I like those pictures. Its amazeing what Mother Nature can do.
From what they said on the weather forcast that if we would have had snow instead of rain we would have had around 5 ft of snow useing their figures that an inch of rain is equal to a foot of snow. Still like to see the snow just in your pictures.

Good morning! Joyce Tormala sure has an eye for pictures. I notice the first place prize for the January 2005 Pasty.com contest is one of her photos previously featured as the daily photo. I think that is very neat! I just might have to purchase that puzzle to keep me busy on some of the long snowy evenings here in the Copper Country.

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. Great pictures this morning. It looks beautiful up there. The bridge looks pretty. Is it snowing now? I see Sharon Smith's cam is up and running again. Their calling for snow, sleet, rain and freezing rain here in northern Indiana. Glad I'm not working today. I'm hoping for 6 to 10 inches of snow instead of the half inch of freezing rain.

Good morning from snow covered Muskegon. We also have about 2-3" inches of new fallen snow with about 12 more headed our way today and tomorrow. It's a nice change when we get the snow down here! Have a great day everyone!

Florida sun, does that equate with all the storms and mold that have occured in the last year. I have 6 bro & sis in Port Charlotte area that 5 months later can not get their roofs repaired or the drywall removed and replaced. Give me the ole Meechigan weather..

For everyone new to the site, besides the picture of the day, we have updated views from the Keweenaw every few minutes on the Bridge Cam page, including 1) the view out of Bill and Daryl Laitila's upstairs window in Hancock, 2) the scene outside Dennis Hext's office at Houghton County Airport, and 3) Sharon Smith's amazing panorama looking back toward Copper Harbor and the nose of Brockway Mountain. I think Van Gough would paint those sunflowers in mental anguish with one ear, and yet would most likely bring out there true beauty through eyes reflecting a snapshot of reality.

It's interesting to see how Mother Nature only covers the tops of the sunflowers, leaving the remaining seeds exposed for the little birdies who haven't migrated away for the winter. It's amazing how many seeds each sunflower head will produce. Of course snow couldn't cover the bottom unless it was high enough and I wouldn't wish that on my family of yoopers, although I hear the snow's on it's way. Hope it doesn't wreak havoc!

I believe that Van Gogh would have painted those sunflowers... with a paint brush...

STURDY STEM....does anyone else see the resemblence
at first glance to one of those more modern style streetlight fixtures?

To Jim, I also thought it was a streetlight fixture covered in snow at first glance. Of course, living here in the Copper Country, we would see a lot of that!

I see a resemblance to the movie version of the Martian spacecraft in H.G.Wells "War of the Worlds". Thanks to Spirit and Opportunity we're assured of our safety. So far.

Good day from Portland the weather here is talking about snow thursday nite which means even if we get a inch the whole city shuts down and I get to miss work which I wouldnt mind, its funny when you think that in the copper country if six inches fall nothing changes but here if one inch falls the whole city shuts down like last year when we had three inches.

Our Copper Country is absolutely filled with a huge variety of flowers.........

It would be more interesting to see how Dali would have painted those sunflowers! It was in the low 80's today, a bit warm even for us. Love the snow and absolutely love the sunflowers. They all face EAST you know.
