Good Morning all. Afternoon #1 Son!! Nice snowfall last night. Our 4 month old pup doesn't know what to make of it. With the sun shining on the pine trees, it looks like a Christmas card!

HELP! As usual I have procrastinated in getting a gift for my nephew and his "new" family ... he adopted his wife's teenage son and daughter (13 - almost 14 - and 11) TODAY!!! I desperately need some suggestions from my Pasty friends as to what kind of family gift we can get them to celebrate their "new" family! Any suggestions???
(Some helpful info - maybe - it must be in the lower peninsula, their daughter has epilepsy [so no flashing lights, etc.] ... and reasonably priced, if possible. And most important ... THE PARTY IS TOMMORROW!!!)
Thanks in advance.

Marsha, Here goes. As long as I can remember, I always looked forward to the day that I would have my own little girl...and, I always wanted to have a Christmas baby. When you're young, that just seems like such a neat birthday month, eh. I had picked her first name, Krystal, when I was quite young...after a friend had mentioned a friend she had made at Lake Orion...by the name of Krystal Lake.
A few years later, my sister introduced me to one of her friends...whose name was Lee Anne...and I fell in love with that name too, because it was the combination of my sisters' first and middle names. And when I married, the name Lee Anne was also a combination of my mother in law and sister in laws' names and middle names.
However, due to a medical condition, my doctor didn't think I would be able to become pregnant...but I did :) About five months into my pregnancy with Krystal, I almost lost her...but luckily lots of bed rest solved that problem. My hobby for the remainder of my pregnancy was crocheting blankets for my sisters and mother...who by the way, still treasure them, after all these years.
During the delivery, complications arose...and I almost died...and if Krystal had not been born when she was, she would not have made it either. Needless to say, she is truly a miracle....who beat so many odds before she took her first breath.
A few years ago, a state trooper had asked me who my hero was...and without missing a beat I replied, "my daughter". The trooper about fell out of his chair...either he didn't cherish his children as I did my daughter...or he had no concept of the 'mother/child bond'.

This same trooper is still scratching his head over the fact that after my ex boyfriend held me at gunpoint...and while I was on the phone with the state police, I realized that my daughter would be getting out of school and would be walking into the house....where my ex with the gun was. Instead of requesting that the state police retrieve my daughter, I sped across town...missed my daughter's school bus...sped to her bus stop...only to find that the bus had already dropped the kiddies off....which meant that my daughter was already in the house...with my ex. So, I sped across the subdivision...to find my daughter walking up the driveway to our house...I had caught her just in time. By some miracle, my daughter had decided to ride a different bus home that day, so she could talk with a friend...which by school policy was not allowed, if the child didn't have a note from home. But she had snuck on the bus, without the bus driver noticing...and this action saved her life, because it deposited her at the driveway...and not in the house, by a mere minute later...or a major miracle later ;) My miracle baby...my hero :)

Hello! This has been driving me crazy since there was snow in Copper Harbor, so I am going to see if someone can answer my question. When you look at the Copper Harbor Cam by Sharon, on the hill in the distance there appears to be a 1/2 circle area that is clear of trees. What is that?
Thanks!

Cindymay,
Congrats on the new addition to your family :)
Hmmm...trying to think of gift ideas. A gift certificate for a family portrait? Some photographers will do outside shoots...so no flashing lights from a camera. Gift certificates to the local movie theater, so they can have a family night? Hmmmm....Get together will other family members and pool your money together for a gift certificate to a hotel that has an indoor waterslide park? Hmmmm. Sorry Cindymay, but I'm at a loss here.

Cindymay,
I have a friend who adpoted his step children when they were small. He talked about getting a box of table games from someone. They spent that winter playing games and getting to know each other. Most table games don't have flashing lights or startling sounds. Some are even made for teenagers.

Good Afternoon all, Thats quite a story Sur5ver. She is indeed a miracle. A funny thing happened to our friend about a month ago. My friend just finished radiation and her friend went down to the Ausable river and he was calling the ducks... a white dove landed on his shoulder!! He brought it home in his hat and her name is "SNOW" I do believe there is more to the story...
I just wanted to share this with all of you, Have a good weekend.

Who stole the bridge? This time it's snow, not fog!

You've had an eventful life, sur5er! Hope the rest of your life is a tad more boring.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Friday, December 2, 2005 - 06:15 pm:

Shelly, I have that photo for my background right now. And I just assumed those white spots were snow/rain drops on the camera on Sharon's deck. But maybe there's something else you're looking at. For what it's worth.:) And I'm now in Texas, warm and humid. Talk more later.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, December 3, 2005 - 02:34 am:

MsKatie, Glad to hear that you arrived safe and sound in Texas. I was worried about you, with the snow storms out west, last week. So how long are you in Texas...for the duration of the winter?

Thank you everyone for the birthday wishes for Krystal :) We burned up the free minutes on our phones today, chatting.

Erica, Krystal's complaint about her name, is that it is so long..with her last name, it's 24 letters long...which makes registration day at college quite a pain. I hear about it at the beginning of every semester, "it took me two hours to register for my classes...now if I had a shorter name, it probably would have taken me like 15 minutes". :)

By Danbury (Danbury) on Saturday, December 3, 2005 - 04:19 am:

Ok, Krystal Lee Anne's complaint made me count - I make that 21 for my name. (Belated Happy Birthday, by the way.) But, unlike me, there's a way out - get married to a guy whose last name is as short as possible. Easy to shave some six letters, by my count.
