This week's Shoebox Memory is relevant in a number of ways to current events here at Pasty Central. First of all, this scan of the old Freda Stamp Mill is from Nancy Sanderson's new book, "Copper Country Post Cards - A View of the Past From The Keweenaw Peninsula", which is available in this year's holiday shipping schedule, featuring free postage when ordered with pasties. Next week we'll have more to say about this wonderful new book, published by Keweenaw Country Historical Society.

But a second connection of the Freda Mill with Pasty Central, has to do with the trestle timbers, like those seen by the shafthouse above. Perhaps you have heard that Pasty.NET has purchased The Hut Inn in Kearsarge, where we are constructing a new network center, building a bigger pasty kitchen, and (next spring) plan to re-open the restaurant. Around 1950 Paul Hendrickson began collecting mining rocks and timbers for use in the original construction of the Hut Inn. It just so happens that many of the big beams came from that trestle at the Freda Mill. You can see some of those beams in this painting by Ellen Torola, which was adapted as a placemat:

The Hut
This past week, the day before the snow started falling, we got a head start on the construction in Kearsarge, removing the old ramp between the restaurant and adjacent motel. You may recall walking this ramp if you ever went to the restrooms at The Hut a few years ago. Again, here you can see some of the Freda Mill timbers, which will continue to be a part of this historic landmark:

Stay tuned to the Pasty Cam for updates on our progress in bringing back The Hut, as the new headquarters of Pasty Central. Have a good week :o)

Good Morning! Don't know much about mines but the pictures are interresting to look at. Again,
congratulations on purchasing the Hut-Inn.

Wonderful that the building will be preserved for all of us who remember the Hut. (not the "Hut-Inn") There was nothing like the original Hut!

Cool idea, great shots.

Hi,

As Brian says, the photo is of one of the Champion Mine shafts at Painesdale, and not of the Champion Mill at Freda.

Here's vote number three for definately not Freda. It does look a lot more like Painesdale.

It's Champion #2 Shaft...

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, November 20, 2005 - 01:40 pm:

Brian, Paul, Gary, Joe,

You are correct, this apparently is NOT the Freda Mill, as I first thought. In the Postcard Book the caption says:

"The Copper Range Company was founded in 1899. The cars would carry the ore to the stamp mill in Freda. Shaft #4 is still standing."
The question then, is today's picture Shaft #2 or Shaft #4?

Edie and I were talking about maybe taking a ride down to Freda this afternoon to see what we can see.

Yup, that's #2 Champion for sure!!

Chalk another one up to Joe ;-)

I do not know which shaft is shown in the photo. The statements were of a general nature. I did not know anyone who could identify it properly. It is a great postcard.
