This week's Shoebox Memory is relevant in a number of ways to current events here at Pasty Central. First of all, this scan of the old Freda Stamp Mill is from Nancy Sanderson's new book, "Copper Country Post Cards - A View of the Past From The Keweenaw Peninsula", which is available in this year's holiday shipping schedule, featuring free postage when ordered with pasties. Next week we'll have more to say about this wonderful new book, published by Keweenaw Country Historical Society.
But a second connection of the Freda Mill with Pasty Central, has to do with the trestle timbers, like those seen by the shafthouse above. Perhaps you have heard that Pasty.NET has purchased The Hut Inn in Kearsarge, where we are constructing a new network center, building a bigger pasty kitchen, and (next spring) plan to re-open the restaurant. Around 1950 Paul Hendrickson began collecting mining rocks and timbers for use in the original construction of the Hut Inn. It just so happens that many of the big beams came from that trestle at the Freda Mill. You can see some of those beams in this painting by Ellen Torola, which was adapted as a placemat:
This past week, the day before the snow started falling, we got a head start on the construction in Kearsarge, removing the old ramp between the restaurant and adjacent motel. You may recall walking this ramp if you ever went to the restrooms at The Hut a few years ago.
