A trio of UPstarts! Many mushrooms are edible, but you really need to know your fungi before you start consuming them, like Frederic W. Koski shows us here with this one. Exotic looking like it is, you wouldn't think this Hericium Ramosum would be something safely eaten, but from what I've read, it's pleasant smelling and tasty too! That small clump in the middle of the stump, captured by Joyce Tormala, are a mystery to me, but those freckled caps sure add color to the fall forest floor. The last shot sent to us by Alicia Koski-Marshall, was taken at the Lakeview Cemetery in Calumet. Bunched together like that, they remind me of the button mushrooms my Dad used to pick, clean and cook up for us with a silver dollar in the frying pan. Supposedly if the coin turned black, the mushrooms were poisonous. (We here at Pasty.com do not recommend using unscientific methods such as that to determine if your mushroom bounty is edible or not!)

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. I never relized how pretty they can look. My favorite were the sponge mushrooms. My Dad would dip them in egg batter and then flour and fry them in butter. Yum, yum, yum!

It appears that the fungus is among us! I always wonder about the first people who looked at them and thought to eat them, very brave.

Neat pics of the mushrooms. The white mushroom would have made a great 'what is it' pic...because I have never seen the likes of that one before. The UP sure does have a wonderful variation of plants.
I must admit that I am too chicken to eat wild mushrooms, with there being so many poisonious ones out there. Neat thing about the penny though Toivo. ;)

Some Biblical scholars think Manna may have been mushrooms.

Let me get this right......the first picture is a mushroom ????? It is beautiful !!!! I thought mushrooms were basically all the same in looks. I know they come in different colors and shapes but there is usually a stem and hood.????

I would love to see that white one!!

Only you Joyce could find a picture perfect double mushroom's, on the tree stump!!!!

You all have a wonderful weekend........xo

A mushroom walks into a bar and says, "Bartender, give me a beer." The bartender says, "We don't serve your kind here." The mushroom says, "Why not? I'm a fun guy."

Becca, that's funny :) Hey Alex, how ya been doing? Hope you are taking care of your health.

By Frederic W. Koski (Fred) on Saturday, November 5, 2005 - 03:12 pm:

My best guess on Joyce's mushrooms are the "Golden Pholiota", slimy cap when wet.
It looks a little like the "Honey Mushroom", but I think honey mushrooms are a little more pale.
No guess on Alicia's photo.

For everyone's information, ALL mushrooms are poisonous in one form or another, even the beloved morel. It all depends on how your body accepts them whether your allergic or not, although a few mushrooms are poisonous to everyone, even animals. I personally have never got sick from eating them, but some people have got deathly sick from morels, go figure.......

While morels fried with a little butter and garlic is absolute paradise, the white 'shelves', as we called them, that grow on the sides of trees, are a close second. I was lucky enough when growing up to have a patch of morels, both black and white, in the back yard that produced about a grocery bag each year. yum yum!!!

Capt. Paul & Dr. Nat must be talking about "Oyster Mushrooms" as the white shelves, one of my favorites to eat.
