A recent drive up to the top of Brockway Mountain in Copper Harbor, gave Brita Haapala a bit of quandary about which way to go once you get to the top. You can go this way and that way, over here or over there, as you can see from the numerous arrows pointing in just about every direction. Of course if you follow the one pointing to the 'Scenic Lookout', you'll get a good view of the colors as they're starting to change on a daily basis now. But I'm betting with the passel of youngsters along for the "beginnings of color" tour, they headed in the direction of the 'Toilets' and 'Grandpa's Barn', after Mom scolded them about climbing on the ledge! :->

Nice way to spend the day.

One of my favorite spots-- maybe someday I will get to see the color change there, so far we have just been summer visitors.

By Melissa DeLuka (Melinmi) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 08:31 am:

Look out Hoton. Here we come. I can't wait to stand on the shores and look out over the Portage. Then touch a tree, lots of trees.

Ahhhhhhhhh...I love those little brown signs. I remember one spring when my daughter and I drove up to the Keweenaw...before the signs were put out for the season. It made it more of an adventure for us, as we drove around. ;)

One of my favorite spots...no trip UP is complete without driving to Copper Harbor and heading up Brockway Mountain....and taking the senic route along the lake to Eagle Harbor....with a stop at the Jampot!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 09:56 am:

Great pictures Brita, hope to go to the Harbor this Weekend, weather permitting. Heard it might snow Thrusday night, rain and snow mixed.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 11:32 am:

Snow? Woo-hoo! I'll be UP Thursday.

By stix (Stixoutwest) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 11:52 am:

It's TOO early for snow!! I'll be up in Mid-Oct. and would prefer to have that hold off, and the cold temps until late Oct.!!
Bob, I agree with you about Cheryl DePuydt(yesterday's posting by Bob). Many of us will miss her, but she left us all with such wonderful memories. I think she touched every person she met in some special way...even if it was just her never ending smile. She is truly an inspiration to us all. She handled this last year with her head and spirits held high.

The toilet sign between the 2 town signs is fun. A lot of Keweenaw signs are fun. About 20 years ago the Toivola Fire Dept. put up some beautiful wooden rotoured signs. 3 were at the T-junction prior to heading down to Agate Beach. One pointing left said "Tis Vay." The one pointing right said, "Tat Vay." The one pointing back the way you came said, "Tudder Vay." Unfortunately within a week all signs along the Misery Bay Road, including the above signs, were torn down. Then there were the signs along the Gay-LacLaBelle Road: "My Brother's Place." And across the road: "My Brother's Other Place." There's on sign on Houghton's 7th Street that says, "4 Sail." (A hull of a buy, I say.) And there was the famous highway sign erected by some enterprising Tech Toots, "End of the earth - 2; Houghton -4." On a snowmobile trail from Mud Lake towards Rabbit Bay there was once a sign, "Anudder crookid trail." And I love Jan Mannikko's shop sign painted on an old railroad switch: "Open" on one side and "Shut" on the other. Cat Harbor's sign: "Population 3" makes you wonder who they all are. And the "Kowsit Lats" sign on Quincy Hill raises eyebrows. I'm sure there are many more.

Brockway Mountain is one of my favorite spots on the planet. It's on the must do list every summer; clears the mind, heals the soul and recharges the batteries. I look forwatd to the time when I'll be able to visit the mountain during the color season.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 12:34 pm:

JAD, your post was hilarious! One of my favorite UP signs is "Do not pass if opposing traffic present"! Duh!

By Pauline (Yooperinpa) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 12:43 pm:

Jad, tooooo funny! Hey! Too early for the four letter word isn't it? Send some of that cool weather east. Beautiful pics! Thanks for sharing!

By joe Pio (Joe) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 01:08 pm:

Great shot, wish I was there working on my home, you can almost see it on Lake Medora from there, if I paddle out to see over the trees I can see the gift shop.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 01:14 pm:

JAD,
I loved your post...what a hoot. I have a feeling that those signs are probably hanging in someone's garage.

Happy Birthday to me and anyone else who shares this day.....

By Capt. Paul & Dr. Nat in Texas (Eclogite) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 04:50 pm:

Wonderful picture as always.

I have a picture up there to die for. It's of my 68 roadrunner parked next to the large sign with a freighter in the background in the near shipping lane. It is one of most cherished pictures I have from the Keweenaw. I've been meaning to have it enlarged and framed in my office, but just haven't yet. Of course I caught heck for having a picture of my car in my office at Tech but not of Dr. Nat!!

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 05:25 pm:

Wow,there are toilets on Brockway?? I don't remember seeing them a few yrs ago.

Happy B.D. Sdcferndale!! We are almost birthday twins!!

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 06:23 pm:

Loved you post JAD...I think all those signs are in your garage as you know them so well. :) or it takes a keen eye and good memory to remember the finer things of life.

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 11:07 pm:

Not in my garage! I took photos. The reason I knew the Tis Vay signs were gone was because I drove back the next week to take pictures. And I did not have my camera with me when I skied the Mud Lake trail. I have photos of all the rest.

By tom ghering (Tomgheringtcmi) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 11:37 pm:

If you really think about it and consider where they are.....the do not pass when opposing traffic is present.............signs make a lot of sense..............nearly had a motorcycle head on with us the other day.........guess he thought the sign funny too...........

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, September 27, 2005 - 11:58 pm:

Tom,
Dat's what da double lines in da middle of da road mean.

By fy1 (Formeryooper1) on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 - 12:59 pm:

MDOT gets the credit for the "do not pass when opposing traffic is present" signs, actually used when there is a passing lane for opposing traffic - I guess there were too many drivers using the "empty passing lane" even though there were cars in the right hand lane.

By 4WDGreg (4wdgreg) on Sunday, October 2, 2005 - 06:53 pm:

On Thursday 9/29, I drove back down from Copper Harbor to Negaunee. The trees in the mountains around Brockway were about 30% turned, and changing fast! The color show from L'Anse to Negaunee was incredible, and probably just past peak today (Sunday 10/2), with the Brockway area probably just peaking today... Marquette and Munising had barely started to turn this weekend. US 2 should be a good show this next week too.
