Holy Cow! What is lingering today?

By Kelly Marshall (Kelly) on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 07:54 am:

According to local news sources, 215 firefighters from 14 local departments brought the blaze under control, which burned about 500 acres.

Kelly, Thanks for the report. Much appreciated. ;)
Hope today finds everyone in the Rice Lake area safe and I hope no homes were lost. A special thanks to all the Keweenaw firemen and their families.

Just returned yesterday from a beautiful weekend in the Easter U.P. Dinner cruise at the Soo Locks and a motorcycle ride from St. Ignace to Whitefish Point. Got to swim in Da Big Lake for the first time in 40 years!!!! So refreshing and invigorating. Warmest I ever remember the water in Superior. Glad to hear the fire is under control.

Saw an Idaho License plate last night that said
XYOOPER. Hope to catch up to that person sooner or later!

I used to have a link in my favorites to a Copper Country birding site that listed all the area counties and the counts of all kinds of birds there. Somewhere along the way I lost it and cannot find it. I really don't think it was Audobon and anything I found last night was not it. Any ideas? I probably heard about the site here first. The reason I am interested is because I want to find out if there are still Kirtland Warblers sited in Baraga County.

Thanks, Zman! I think that is the site I was talking about. (Probably heard about it from you months or years ago.) It looks different, but the picture across the top looks familiar. Had a great time surfing through it. Interesting to read about the flamingo at Autrain Lake.

By maija (Maijami) on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 07:12 pm:

There was a flamingo at Autrain!?

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 07:26 pm:

Maija,
Yep, a flamingo was spotted in Autrain Lake on August 3...pretty neat, eh. They believe it may have flown that far up north due to the heat...or because of the huricanes...or it may be from a zoo.

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 07:52 pm:

Has the Flamingo been spotted again since the first time it was seen? I wonder how it would fare out of it's normal range. I hope it finds the way home.
They are such a beautiful color...almost like a sunset.

God Bless our VOLUNTEER firemen. You won't find better men on this planet!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 09:46 pm:

This flamingo was white with pink-tipped wings.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 09:58 pm:

The flamingo's pale coloring is due to the change in it's diet, in the UP. Could it be those pasties? :-)

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 - 10:35 pm:

I just returned from Green Bay earlier this evening so was quite surprised by the news of the fire. Also had a bunch of emails to go through and in them was a number of aerial shots from Rick Anderson at Skypixs. You can check out his other shots by clicking here: Rick's view of the fire!

Rick Anderson, Thank You for sharing the pictures
of the Rice Lake Fire with us. Also enjoyed many
of your other pictures. Even the one of Mary Drew.
Now we know what she looks like!

By PC (Pcarlson) on Wednesday, August 17, 2005 - 09:38 pm:

Does anyone know if the flamingo is still hanging around Autrain Lake.
