Making your way to the Porcupine Mountains: half the fun is the trip along the way. Thanks to David Soumis, we get a glimpse of some of the scenes you'll experience driving the highway that takes you there. According to David, we're traveling to the Porkies, via Ontonagon, so this slideshow must be along highway 64 that takes you from Ontonagon, through Silver City, to the Porcupines and Lake of the Clouds. This well-named lake, pictured here by Keith Kirby in our ever-expanding Guest Gallery, is located up in the 'mountains' of this State Park, just about as close to the clouds as a lake can get!

AH YES THE SECOND PIC. IS ALWAYS A BEAUTIFULL SITE I HAVE LOVED IT FOR MANY MANY YEARS, IT IS JUST AS NICE LOOKING FROM THE BOTTOM UP TO THE BIG ROCK. THE HIKING TRAIL HAS A FOOT BRIDGE AT SOUTH END OF THE LAKE.IT IS SO NICE IN THE FALL. COPPER PEAK SKI FLYING HILL IS DIRECTLY BEHIND THE PERSON TAKING THE PHOTO (ANOTHER GREAT VIEW) THANK YOU FOR A WONDERFULL SHOT

By Lahelo (Lahelo) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 07:40 am:

Mary, The Porkies are on highway M-107. Silver City starts at where M-64, M45 and M-107 meet. The lake shore is on M-107 and M-45. M-64 goes through White Pine and into Bergland. The lake shore is a beautiful drive anytime of the year! Just to see the lake in her glorious beauty is a sight all in itself.

By Tamara Martishus (Tamara59) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 07:45 am:

AWESOME! We will be up in that area on Friday and I am Porkie Dreamin'. Thank you for the pictures. I am so excited.

By Lahelo (Lahelo) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 07:54 am:

Ray, the Copper Peak ski flying hill is not behind that person who is taking the picture, in the Porkies. They hill is actually just outside of Bessemer, Michigan which is about 40 plus miles from there.

By ray miller (Raymsc) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 08:09 am:

I THINK YOU SHOULD TAKE THE TRIP AND HAVE ANOTHER LOOK AS I AM FROM THIS AREA I LOGGED THE PORKIES FOR MANY YEARS FOR CONNORS LUMBER CO. AND DID PLAY BERGLAND, WHITE PINE, IN MY YOUNGER DAYS

By steve juratich (Steve) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 08:23 am:

ray, i've seen the jump many times myself. you're right, but have never tried the hike down

By ray miller (Raymsc) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 08:34 am:

I DID TRY IT TWO YEARS AGO WITH MY SON AND TURNED AROUND. IT IS TOUGH ESPECIALY AFTER HIKING THE FALLS AT PRESQUE ISLE PARK

By Pauline (Yooperinpa) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 08:44 am:

I love the sense of peace you get when you look at the lake. Thanks for sharing.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 08:51 am:

I remember the top spot very well. One of our more laborious trips around Michigan included this road.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 09:47 am:

Beautiful, rugged area. We usually save our Porkies trip for our color tour. We'll be UP to Aura tomorrow through Monday. Probably spend Saturday in the Keweenaw, going for lunch at the Harbor Haus. Sunday might be tostada pizza at the Ambassador and whatever else happens. Maybe the mouth of the Huron or Pte. Abbaye.

By Yooper in MN (Yooper_in_mn) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 09:49 am:

I never bothered to turn around and look for Copper Peak while looking at the lake. Looks like I better make a trip there to find out. And maybe I'll lounge around the shores of Lake Superior too...how am I supposed to get any work done today while I'm dreaming about that????

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 10:57 am:

What I meant to ask in my above post is if the humidity has dropped. I think it has down here today. Wondering if I need long or short pants, or both, as usual!

By dlp (Babyseal) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 11:10 am:

Marsha, the humidity has dropped and the temperature has dropped also to a more comfortable level. The temp is in the 70's.

By ray miller (Raymsc) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 11:15 am:

steve the best way to get to the bottom of the rock is to come off the south boundry rd about a 4 mi.?? hike

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 11:41 am:

Visited the porkies just the other day...... now home in the "downer" peninsula as I heard it referred to by a yooper while visiting.

By Tim Hull (Hvilletim) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 11:59 am:

Hello all - this is my first message to the group and the pictures are very appropriate. One of the last times my mother was well enough to go for a trip, my wife and I took her to her beloved Lake Superior (where she was 'replenished' by wading in the cold waters) and along the way to Lake in the Clouds. My mother (Alice Ruth Lehti / Hull) was born in Gaastra and grew up in Houghton / Hancock, PLUS she was 100% Finnish - I really miss those saunas and fish boils. My kid's now love to visit the UP and all their cousins. Thanks to all of you for your input and for this site. WONDERFUL!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 12:27 pm:

Love the pics...they bring back memories of many a wonderful vacation to the Porkies. Lahelo, I have always referred to the route that goes west from Silver City into the park as Boundary Road. I see from Ray's post that he uses that same name too. Hmmm...

By Alice Neilson (Alicevtaca) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 02:36 pm:

Boy, did these two pictures make me homesick! Thanks!

By lz (Llamamama) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 03:51 pm:

Very beautiful! I've missed a few days of visits to Pasty Cam. What a welcome back!

By Downstatedon (Downstatedon) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 05:01 pm:

By NKR (Nkr) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 05:56 pm:

Hello from Mishawaka IN. My computer has been down for a few weeks but it is up and running now and just in time to see two beautiful pictures of one of my favorite places, the UP. Happy to be back!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 06:45 pm:

Hey NKR, I was wondering where you were at. Glad to hear that your computer is feeling better. I just got my computer completely up and running after having problems with it for a month.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 08:31 pm:

In '79 my folks moved to White Pine. That's when I discovered the beauty of western UP. The photos are of my two favorite views. Eventually I would have inheirited their house. I daydreamed what it was going to be like! But when they moved "back home' to Milwaukee I was glad they were secure there. But it broke my heart. Now I just dream. (sigh)

By Catherine--Holland MI (Catherine) on Thursday, August 11, 2005 - 09:30 pm:

The used to be named Carp Lake. I bet the current name
draws a few more people!

By Lahelo (Lahelo) on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 08:03 pm:

I stand corrected! You can see Copper Peak from the back side of where that person was standing, but only on a clear day ......we measured it ..it is about 20 miles straight through the mountains. It is 40 some miles from there to Bessemer via the roads.

By Lahelo (Lahelo) on Friday, August 12, 2005 - 08:04 pm:

I stand corrected I was wrong. You can see Copper Peak on a clear day when you turn around and look from where that picture was being taken. By road it is 40 some miles to get there, through the mountains its 20 miles away that you can see it.
