From east to west, the entire Upper Peninsula of Michigan is a delightful place to explore - its history, people, and places. One place we revisit from time to time here on the Pasty Cam is Mackinac Island, just offshore from St. Ignace in the Straits area.

In 1947 the Grand Hotel began filming a movie starring Esther Williams (*splash*) and Jimmy Durante (ha cha cha cha!). Some of the scenes were shot in the 500,000 gallon Esther Williams Swimming Pool. The next summer there was a convention for prosecuting attorneys held on the Island in August. Longtime Pasty.NET member Jan Dahlquist was fortunate enough to travel to the conference with her Dad, M.J. Anuta, who was prosecuting attorney in Menominee County at the time. And fortunate for us that someone took along a camera.

That's bathing beauty Jan sitting on the edge of the pool in the top photo, with a friend in the water. Here are some other pictures from the trip which she included:

Enjoyed all the pictures. Does the pool still exist? Speaking of existing...does Blaney Park hotel, pool, horse riding, etc still live? My pre-teen grand adventure with the Greats (aunts & uncles)found us staying there in the late '50s on a return trip from Detroit. The pool pictures brought back the memory.

Great Pix, but where is everyone today, to enjoy them!

Finally took the time to register today. It is a lot easier than you might expect, if anyone has been reluctant to register like I just did.

The group photo is especially interesting. It appears the man on the right may be holding the very camera which took the photo just above it. Wonder if there are any other color pictures available from the trip?

Hey there Jan. It was so much fun seeing your picture on the Shoebox Memories page. I put the bee in Charlie's bonnet ?? years ago for that page with a snapshot I had taken of the South American when I was in high school. Charlie took off with the idea, and I think all of us who regularly check in to the Pasty net have learned a lot about the history of the UP from it. I hope people keep contributing to the page.
