Good morning from the sunny hot muggy state of Florida......some wag covered one of the "Welcome to the state of Forida" state signs....now reads "Welcome to the state of FEMA"! Lets hope that's not too accurate!

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 07:29 am:

Good morning from a hot, muggy Mishawaka, IN. Temperatures to be in the 90's again today. Went north to the eastern UP last week for cool weather. If I hadn't seen Lake Superior I would have thought I never left IN. It was so warm---much to warm for the UP.
Have a good day.

4 days and I'll be on the second largest island on the second largest lake (by volume) in the world. I'll let u guess ...

By lz (Llamamama) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 07:32 am:

Good morning from hot and muggy SW MI. Thanks Yooper for the smile at the start of our day.

By Brad of Canton (Bradofcanton1) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 07:45 am:

Charlie,
I noticed that there are no new messages posted to the achieves. Are they not shown anymore? It is unfortunate about the spam attack. I wish there was an easy may to prevent all spam. Great web site and I try to visit every day.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 10:45 am:

Jeff, Enjoy your visit to Isle Royal ;)
Long time no see, Susan. Hope your mom is recovering nicely from her surgery.
Yooper, thanks so much for your pics...they give me a smile each day.
Busy cleaning all the sand that was tracked into the house from a day at the beach. Told hubby that the DNR called...they want their sand back.

Does anyone in L'anse,or where ever, know if the Buckhorn Bar & Resturant is still there, like it was in 1964. Looking at the skypictures,it looks like its gone. One of my old hangouts a few years ago.

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 11:13 am:

The SECOND largest island .... not Isle Royale...

try again, nobody has it yet !!

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 12:11 pm:

Jeff....are you going to Beaver Island ?

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 12:30 pm:

or Drummond Island?

By Debbie (Babyseal) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 12:37 pm:

Jeff, Can I have two guesses?
My first guess would be the obvious, Mackinac Island.
My second guess is the strip of land that starts right as you drive across the Portage Lift Bridge to Hancock and extends to the most northern tip past Copper Harbor. The Keweenaw!!!!

By maija (Maijami) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 12:42 pm:

Or Sugar Island?

By lz (Llamamama) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 01:15 pm:

Jeff:
Can you give us a hint - is it owned by a state or a province? Michipicoten?

By David Latvala (Daveofmohawk) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 01:16 pm:

The largest island on the largest lake on the largest island on the largest freshwater lake in the world [by surface area] is the island that is in Siskwit Lake on Isle Royale; can't remember the name of the island though? Has anyone been out picking blueberries? Someone told me that they were dried up because of the lack of rain.

By Lulubelle/Hancock (Lulubelle) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 01:26 pm:

The name of that island is Ryan island on Isle Royale in Siskiwit Lake.
Blueberries are out in the area but please be careful where you park. The sand is so dry that people are getting stuck and have to get someone to pull them out. My daughter was out near Rice Lake and came upon a couple who needed an off-road towing service to pull them. Haven't had any rain for so long but an inch promised for later today.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 02:41 pm:

I like David and Lululabelle's answers...because it would make my answer pretty darn close. ;)
Keweenaw is not considered a natural island, because the channel is man made.

By Chris Beaudoin (Dunerat) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 04:39 pm:

Jeff--

I did some work on Google this afternoon and my answer is Isle St. Ignace up near Nipigon. This was not an easy search.

By John (Johnmich) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 04:43 pm:

I second the vote for Michipicoten Island. BTW, can anyone give me the correct pronunciation the island?

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 05:39 pm:

Its an island that is a national recreation area...... owned by Michigan or the federal government. If that island you found Chris is BIGGER than the island I'm going to ..... I stand corrected !! Hint..... the island I am going to is ONLY about 200-300 yards off the shore of the great UP.

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 05:46 pm:

ah geez..... I shot my mouth off too quickly ---- the island I'm going to is the SIXTH largest island in Lake Superior. Man, I consider myself a geography buff too. This link will help you.

Wow, there are some BIG islands around the great lakes.

Grand Island off the shore of Munising.

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 06:56 pm:

lullabelle ------ you got it.

I'm running the Grand Island Marathon - 26.2 miles around the perimeter of the island.

Jeff,
Good luck at the marathon. :)

By Anna Roehrich (Updreamer) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 09:05 pm:

2 weeks ago today I passed Grand Island on the Pictured Rocks Boat Tour...gorgeous day, perfect weather for it. Now I'm stuck in the hot, humid depths of Jersey. :( Can't wait to head back to the UP again.

By Mike from Herscher (Saltshakeri57) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 11:54 pm:

Am checking also, just logged in. Love this site for the last three years. Need my UP fix.

By Susan Caryl (Gilbsulmum) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 11:56 pm:

Sur5er...yup, I'm still around, just not posting much. Mum doing really well...Dr says he's never seen such a pretty knee. :) Her therapy ended Friday so now it's just a matter of recuperating and gaining strength. Thanks for the good thoughts. Hope you're finding ways to keep cool!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 - 02:44 am:

Susan,
The rain cometh and bringth more humidity and mosquitos. Sigh. Still waiting for the replacement pool to be delivered. Glad to hear that your mom is doing so well...I know that the recoup from that is really hard and painful.
