I was just looking at the pics and getting so homesick, I can't wait anymore. I am Hoton bound tomorrow!

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 07:31 am:

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. This Blast From The Past is one of my favorite pictures. I can look at the picture and hear the crackle of the lightning and the rumble of thunder.

EMMY Missing Home; Have you been gone so long that you forgot how to spell Houghton? Have a Great time.

By NKR Mishawaka IN on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 09:01 am:

Japei - Very interesting. Love the music.

By Dusty,Ripley on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 09:06 am:

Good Morning ALL! Has anyone seen or heard from "Laki" from Hancock? I havn't seen him at the cafe and am missing his stories about the old mining days!

By maijaMI on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 09:21 am:

To Dave and Emily: I just inherited my mother's diaries. She consistently spelled Houghton as 'Hoton' She was very literate, so I think it was an abbreviation used tnen, like we now use w for with and thru for through, etc.

By sur5er on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 09:46 am:

Maija, How awesome...your mother's diaries. What a wealth of information about the past. Love the Hoton abbreviation. Enjoy :)

Margaret, I tried replying to the email you sent me the other day...but have been having problems with sending emails. Sigh. Hope you got it.

NKR, Yep, them there are finally rain storms headed our way...I think. Bout time, eh. Well, at least I hope we get the rain this time. Yesterday, I filled up my pool...and then I heard thunder...so I ditched the idea of going in the pool. Lots of thunder yesterday...but no rain. But today does look promising for rain, yes?

By Janie, IA. on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 10:00 am:

There are some snowmobile trails we have come across that spell Houghton, Hoton. Must be the quick way.

By Cindy--Cent. Heights on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 10:13 am:

With this down pour of rain were having right now in Calumet, the humidity is going to be very high today!!! Stop in Ahmeek today for the classic car show. There should be some pretty nice cars there. Old and new. Some beauties I know for sure. Have a great day and try to stay cool....

By Margaret, Amarillo TX on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 10:15 am:

Mornin' Like the lightening.

By Yooper Kid on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 10:15 am:

Growing up in Houghton, there were many times when we abbreviated it to Hoton--never officially of course, but just for fun and done quite affectionately.

By gmw on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 10:27 am:

82 and rising in Houghton. Can't stand this humidity. I"m so thankful we have 2 A/C units
in our house this summer! Sure makes a big difference. Have a great day.

By IndyPrincess on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 11:08 am:

Today's high in Cedar Rapids, Ia. 94, heat index of 103, where's winter?

By Fran,Ga on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 11:23 am:

Hi everyone, haven't been on much lately as I have been extremely busy getting all of the legal things took care of after my husbands death. I did want to tell you that back in the 50's we all abreviated Houghton to Hoton. It was just for fun.I still do sometimes if I am writing to family. The temps here in N.Ga have only been in the 80'sbut the humidity is probably as high as the temp. Very very miserable out there.

Sur5er,I'll be thinking of you floating around out in your pool. :) Sure wish I has a pool or at least a lake to cool off in.

By sur5er on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 12:01 pm:

Fran, I am hoping to get in the pool today...as soon as the rain stops. I told hubby that it looks like we have crop circles in the backyard from me moving the pool, so I don't kill the grass. Hang in there while doing the legal paperwork...that has to be tough.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 12:24 pm:

Hoton fits on a snowmobile trail sign better! Hope all are having fun at the Aura Jamboree today. We couldn't make it with our bean soup this year due to other conflicts. Have a great day!

By KarenMTU on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 12:33 pm:

Dusty... I saw Russell AKA Laki in Dollar Bay the other day. He seemed ok and should be back in Hancock sometime next week. He should have alot of new stories to tell!

YOOPER-you're awesome!!!

By sur5er on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 04:38 pm:

Great pic...as usual Yooper. Aaaaaaaaaaah, the breeze from the fan feels ooooooooh sooooo cooooooool :) Like Cooper Country Resident said, you're awesome.
Cooper Country Resident: Has it at least cooled off a bit up there, yet?

By Yooper on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 04:42 pm:

I know!!! bigsmile

By Mary Lou on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 04:52 pm:

Fran..I just got back from a dip in Lake Michigan......it was so nice and warm.....it is 91 degrees here in Escanaba and I can not remember when we last had rain......hopefully we'll get some soon I know we are way behind our average....my grass looks like hay and I am trying to water. I live adjacent to the Escanaba Country Club and they are pouring water on the course but it is starting to look dry, too. Holy Wah, eh??...does Heikie Lunda do a rain dance??

By c on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 05:08 pm:

Sur5fer-still 84 degrees and cloudy. Personally,
70 or 75 degrees for me. Nice to hear from you,
have a great evening!!!

By copper country resident on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 05:09 pm:

WHOOPS- LEFT OUT THE REST, MESSAGE FROM COPPER COUNTRY RESIDENT TO sur5fer...

By LLM on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 05:36 pm:

Sur5er, would you please send some of that rain a little to the west? It's 90 and dry over here by the IL/IN border.

PS-I'm a FAN of Yooper's graphics too.

By sur5er on Saturday, July 16, 2005 - 06:49 pm:

Copper Country Resident: Same here...I can't tolerate anything over the mid 70's. Am hoping that you at least have a breeze off of Lake Superior to cool you off. No wind moving off of Lake Michigan here...and hubby is outside working on my truck...so I put the fan out there to at least move the air a bit.
LLM, Sending rain...not much...but some. It rained for an entire 15 minutes. But at least it came down hard. It's something..right? The grass is still straw...but the weeds flourished in the rain. :)

By Kevin K, Lodi, Ca. on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 03:37 am:

Funny to read the post's about the weather back in Mich. Here on the left coast, we have been in the 100's (102-108) since Monday and not due for a cool down (95) till next Wed. We haven't had rain since late May early June and probably won't see any until Late Oct. or early Nov.

By Kevin K, Lodi, Ca. on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 03:41 am:

Just a side note, It's 12:45 am and still 85 degs. here.

By danbury; quoting on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 03:56 am:

Sounds like you're "stuck in Lodi again", Kevin K. :)

By Charlie at Pasty Central on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 08:55 am:

A technical problem this morning has delayed the start of the new Pasty Cam week. There's plenty to keep you busy over in the Archives

By sur5er on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 09:02 am:

Good morning everyone :) Techincal problems with Pasty Cam? 1) Charlie's alarm clock didn't go off this morning...hey now, that's technical with all those neat features such as snooze control; or 2) Charlie's coffee pot isn't working...again technical with all those neat buttons that coffee pots come with today. And Charlie didn't get his caffine boost for the morning.

:)

OKAY! OKAY! I'm awake now. Whats on the agenda today? Weather, swimming, how many yoopers does it take to screw in a light bulb?

By Knitter on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 09:31 am:

We're all so bright we barely have to touch the light bulb ! LOL

By Lifetime yooper L.MI. on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 09:45 am:

It's gonna be another hot one today ! We're spending the day at Rabbit Bay today, and will stop and pick up a couple of barbecue chicken orders from Bootjack F.D. on our way. I hope somebody who flies over the cmx airport would snap a picture of the rose-thimbleberry painting done there yeaterday, so we can see how it looks from the air.

By sur5er on Sunday, July 17, 2005 - 09:59 am:

Boris, I like Knitter's answer. Or, how about 'none'...because we're so bright, we don't need artifical light. ;)
