Driving from east to west across the U.P. we've seen many a flower growing along the highways along our route. A trio of U.P. beauties take center stage today, along with a couple frequent visitors to the flower kingdom. Yellow Dandelions may be a nuisance to some folks, but Stanley Spruce captured a shot of a big old bee that thinks it's dinner! I know a few Mom's that think dandelions are pretty, especially in the grubby hands of her little ones, so pleased to bring Mom a bouquet. The next flora isn't one you'll normally find in the wild, the Bleeding Heart. Pictured here from Tom Cook, this beauty is quite unique hanging so brightly off the stems, perfectly forming it's namesake. A Ladyslipper is found in the wild, but I'm not sure if it can be grown in your own flower box. Joyce Tormala snuck up on this one so she could catch the teeny spider busy spinning a web along to move from place to place. Getting that close-up, gives us a good look at the flower and the spider's shadow too!

Happy First Day of Summer!

Wondering what to do for a summer vacation this year? Make arrangements to be in Calumet on July 2nd , for Pasty Fest 2005. You'll be entertained with parades, music and games, and better than that, you'll be treated to a free pasty if you're one of the first 400 at Aggasiz Park, starting at 11:00. Bring along the coupon from the Gazette or the Finnish American Reporter. The Pasty Central crew will be on hand to distribute those U.P. Pasties and partake in the fun too! Eleven more days, so don't delay!

Thanks for the pretty flower pics on this first day of summer! The spider gives me chills, tho, so will use the bleeding heart pic as my background today.

I cant remember the whole story about Bleeding Heart flowers, but I think that it goes like this. If you remove the white part at the bottom of the flower you will have Cinderellas slippers, and if you split the bloom in half you will have something that looks like her coach. Maybe someone else can remember the tale that is hidden in these flowers.

Nice pictures. I am anxious to see everything first hand sometime late summer or early fall, unless, of course, hurricane evacuations make an earlier trip to the UP in order.

I always thought that if you open the flower of a bleeding heart, it's a women in a bath tub.

Nice flowers. Happy summer everybody!!

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 - 09:33 pm:

Aren't the wild flowers pretty? Mimi and I have seen a few yellow lady slippers in the last week in a ditch about 3/4 of a mile from here. The Indian paintbrushes, violets, daisies, milkweed and wild roses, red and white clover, buttercups and on and on. The LORD sure is evident by HIS handiwork, 'eh? (Psalms 19)

Good to see you back Ken! I sure miss seeing all of those flowers. I do get a large crop of purple violets in the spring.

Kudos to you Stanley!! I love the bee shot! My photo abilities are not as good. I usually have to get my face that close to get the experience!
