Good to know that even you have problems sometimes, Charlie!!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 08:04 am:

Oh my!! That's too funny, Charlie!!

By RD, Iowa (Rdiowa) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 08:07 am:

For that, we should all get a breakfast pasty.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 08:09 am:

What is in a breakfast pasty?

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 09:10 am:

I remember 2006 and how mild it was that December.
That was the year I bought the Wing and I went for a drive on December 24th all the way up M-29 to Port Huron.
Come on, global warming :-)

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 09:20 am:

Mickill, potatoes, bacon, eggs and cheese are in some breakfast pasties. There are other variations where you can use sausage or ham. This is not the voice of experience, it's called Google. :)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 09:52 am:

WOW, Charlie, does this mean we all get a 'bird' today, no matter what time we show up?;) 9:50am here.
Speaking of unusual weather, I wish Capt. Paul and/or Dr. Nat would come forward and give their opinions on the "Greenland Block". Being reported as the weather phenomenon that's causing the lack of some areas receiving cold temps and snow.

By Tom (Tom) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 10:58 am:

I wish Dr.Nat and Capt.Paul would comment on the
findings in Menominee County and parts of northern Wisconsin relative to ore deposits. We hear gold, silver, iron ore, etc. any idea just what might be
in those areas?
And what is the possibility of extracting those ores
in a manner that won't harm the environment.

By Bob Williams (Wabbit) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 11:17 am:

I wish Dr. Nat and Capt. Paul would comment on the forming of the Lake Superior Basin.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 11:29 am:

Looks like a busy day ahead for Capt and Dr. Nat.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 12:00 pm:

Sounds like you're a prospector, Tom.
I would also like to read Capt.'s and Dr.'s 'takes' on yours and Bob's questions. Should prove to be interesting.

By Dr. Nat (Drnat) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 02:00 pm:

And I thought today was going to be my first day off after a long semester!

In answer to the question about the Greenland Block, I must first remind everyone that the atmospheric system is very complex, so subtle changes in distant places can have far-reaching effects. The Greenland Block is a zone of high pressure that develops over Greenland in northern hemisphere winter and can steer storm systems and cold air masses. When a strong Greenland block develops, cold air tends to be directed to the Midwestern United States and Northern Europe. For example, last year there was a strong Greenland Block in place and Germany had an exceptionally cold winter. This year, no Greenland Block has developed, so it is likely that winter in the Midwest will be milder. However, and this is a very big however, the Greenland Block is known to develop quickly and other climate phænomena, such as La Niña, have an influence on it, so things could change in the second half of winter.

I, or the Captain, will try to answer the other questions later.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 02:31 pm:

Bob,

If you goto the Various Topics page and look under the Geology - the U.P. and other places page, you will see an answer to that very question. I would have just copied/pasted it here, but I doubt Charlie/Mary would like such a long message posted on the WhatsUP page.

If you have trouble finding it, the message is about 3/4 of the way down, posted on September 15, 2009.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 02:53 pm:

Wow!! A lot of ship traffic out on Superior today! Getting the last loads in for the season...

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 03:20 pm:

Tom,

I believe the area you speak of in Menominee County is the Back Forty Project, a joint venture between Aquila Resources and HudBay Minerals. I wouldn't say I know a lot about the project, but a good overview can be found on Aquila's Back Forty Project website. Also, click on some of the links on that page as they will provide more information about the deposit and regional geology.

As far as extracting the ores: man has the technology to safely and cleanly extract any mineral out of the ground, and many companies do a fantastic job of this. Unfortunately, we never hear of the success stories of mining reclamation and only the terrible propaganda and photos opponents of mining want us to see. These days, companies in the US and Canada cannot even scratch the ground without posting bonds for environmental cleanup so that they will return the land as it was before operations began.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 03:35 pm:

Good pics.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 04:33 pm:

I apologize, Dr. Nat, I promise not to 'hold my hand up again until next year'.:) Thank you for that info, I respect your knowledge in these matters.
Now I've gotta go do my 'homework' assigned by your Capt.;) Thank you, both!

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 04:41 pm:

That is SISU. Hope they all make it home for Christmas.

By Bob Williams (Wabbit) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 08:50 pm:

Capt. Paul...Thanks for the link to the message. That is really interesting to read. I will have to spend more time on that page.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 09:04 pm:

At first that page really took off, Bob. Lately through it has slowed down a bit; maybe I've done such a good job of educating the PastyCammers that no one has anymore questions..... J
