'Holiday Classics', was the theme for the Lake Linden-Hubbell Elementary School Christmas program. It featured grades Kindergarten through Sixth, under the direction of Jennifer Johnson Fritz, with guitar accompanist, Robert Fritz, and what a show it was. The kids started the music with, Joy to the World and ended with, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, singing twelve other classics in between.

My grandson is in the last two photos. He's third from the left in the back row. They sang, The First Noel and then played, Little Drummer BAG on their recorders, their first public performance playing these instruments and they really sounded great. I know, you're saying to yourself...'Isn't it Little Drummer BOY?' Normally it is, but the kids explained before they played it, that because they'd be playing the notes B-A and G, they renamed it Little Drummer BAG. Quite clever, I must say.

I remember those days fondly from when my older 3 boys were kids. There was always a Christmas concert of some kind put on by them. Then when my younger son was in school, it was politically incorrect to have a Christmas concert. So, we had a winter concert with NO Christmas music. NOW, it's reverting back to the old days. People are standing up for their rights and I'm loving it!! VERY nice pictures to start the day! Thanks for sharing!

What wonderful pictures! Another one of the true meanings about Christmas! Old fashion values are irreplaceable!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, December 23, 2011 - 08:05 am:

OH yeah, AWESOME to see the Merry Christmas sign!

By Cindy Barga (Hoosiergirl) on Friday, December 23, 2011 - 08:16 am:

We had a Christmas concert at the school I work at on Wednesday. I have to say the cutest ones are the kindergarten kids. They were so into it, with their jingle bell reindeer antlers and happy little faces. They put on a great show for the entire school and their smiling parents.

Hyvää Joulua kaikille!

Those children are adorable. Our son was in a Christmas program when he was about 12. I didn't attend due to a cold. Husband and daughter went and told me afterwards, that Rick either forgot his lines or had stage fright, whatever....he walked off stage. Sure glad I hadn't attended.:}
I agree, Deb and Janie, it's nice to head back down the road in the right direction once more!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, December 23, 2011 - 09:40 am:

Amen! First thing you notice is that big MERRY CHRISTMAS sign! In some places that would still close down the production ~ so good to see the show go on in real America!

Great pictures of your grandson, Mary. He looks like he's having a great time!

Do all those kids really know how to play the flute or are they kazoos?
When I was in the 4th grade I was picked to sing the lead solo in our Xmas choir. However, I came down with a cold and could not practice, so they gave the part to someone else. That was a hard thing for this 19-year old to go through. :-)

"Do all those kids really know how to play the flute or are they kazoos?"

They look more like recorders, very common grade school instruments.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, December 23, 2011 - 12:08 pm:

Yep, FRNash, that's what Mary said they were, 'recorders'. Surely tells me that I'm on the 'downhill run', we didn't have those way back when, just 'kazoos', as Alex called 'em.

It is so nice to see Lake Linden stand up for there rights and have the Merry CHRISTmas sign and sing "Joy To The World". I agree with you Deb.

Played a black instrument in Atlantic Mine grade school just
like the ones here called a tonette.

Alex, just in case you thought everyone missed your '19-year-old' comment........ ;-}

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, December 23, 2011 - 03:12 pm:

Anybody know if those kids sang "Christmas Canon" like the Trans Siberian Orchestra kids did?

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Friday, December 23, 2011 - 04:49 pm:

My two sons played the drums, drove me up a wall but it was worth it. Now, my grandson, four years old is doing the same. There is nothing like learning how to play a musical instrument. The oldest son played with 5 bands in St. Louis, made good money while attending college. The youngest son played at home and taught his son how to play. He regrets it to this day. :)

When my brothers' and I were kids, my youngest brother was learning to play the trumpet. Soooo he thought it would be funny to go in the basement reallll early and play taps by the furnace vents, if you will. Back then they were heating ducts that looked like an octopus was in the basement. After a couple times of that, my mom took the trumpet away from him for a couple of days. He never did it again after that. My youngest brother was always doing something like that. I wish he was still with us to continue doing things like that....miss him.

Thanks jbuck, I was academically challenged :-) Seriously though, the lead singing role did happen and I was rather proud at the time. All the girls in my class were going ooouu. I felt like a finalist on American Idle.

By Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale) on Friday, December 23, 2011 - 09:53 pm:

I was in a Christmas play in Dollar Bay school in the early 60's. I played an Angel and of course my sisters ribbed me endlessly about being an Angel. My mother made my gown, the school provided the halo and wings. While on stage, I looked out in the audiance and saw my mother "beaming", I almost forgot my one line. An actress I am not. Merry Christmas to every one in Pasty Land.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, December 23, 2011 - 10:12 pm:

I don't watch TV, but have read about that 'show', so I'd say that's a good name for it, Alex.

By john mich (Johnofmi) on Saturday, December 24, 2011 - 03:18 am:

Alex, was that "American Idle" (instead "Idol") a joke or mistake? Anyway, I liked it. I'd like to try out for "American Idle". Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Saturday, December 24, 2011 - 04:15 am:

Alex, I'm with you! The 2nd grade was the best 4 years of my life.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, December 24, 2011 - 07:51 am:

It took you 4 years to get through the 2nd grade?
