They all have the Pasty.Com watermark in the lower right-hand corner.

Well, at least 3 of them have clouds, water and trees, and 2 have just trees. Just not sure. No rain or snow!!

Good morning!! This year's picture is totally awesome.

Have a great day!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 08:01 am:

Awesome, RD!! Cuz I looked, and looked, and always at least one of them didn't have anything I was looking at, except the Pasty.Com watermark.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 08:02 am:

Good Morning. The pictures taken in odd numbered years were taken on cloudy days - they have clouds in common.

We'll be wondering about that all day

Concerned this morning by reading George Hite's FB page, the recent posts sound as though George has passed on. :(

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 08:07 am:

LOL! Close but no Bird is better than close but no cigar!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 08:19 am:

You do realise that close only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades, right?? J

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 08:32 am:

Close but no cigars counted with Bill & Monica..........T.M.I.!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 09:22 am:

On a sad note, George Hite did pass away yesterday at his home in Eagle Harbor. I had just spoken with him yesterday morning. We will be posting a note from the family on his website, EagleHarborWeb.net

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 09:55 am:

Nice shot of the "Blue Goose". That plane (airline) was the reason we never flew home while living in Charlevoix.....that was about the only way to fly out of the northern LP at that time (1979-80).

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 10:12 am:

My sincere condolences to Mr. Hite's family. He's really going to be missed.....he certainly had a way with words, very descriptive of his surroundings, etc. As one read his writings, one could 'see' exactly what he was speaking of. Farewell, George.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 11:47 am:

Boy that Marine Traffic is really cool. Well a week and a 1/2 till were U.P. in the Keweenaw, but who's counting, lol. It's gonna be odd not being able to go to L.B. any more since the attorneys and the witch gave it away, but we'll make do. Marty and I will be roaming the woods and our favorite eating establishments, Mike's not sure he can make it. I think if we still had the cottage he'd be more inclined to come U.P., sure am looking forward to getting away for awhile. I ain't gonna lie, it's gonna feel real different!

God speed to George Hite, my heart just dropped reading this. I will miss his post and his unique way with words. I feel he was blessed to be out on the lake this summer doing what he loved. I have the picture he posted on FB of his rocking chair by the fire as my wallpaper. I guess it is a fitting picture for today, his empty chair by the warm fireplace. Rest in Peace George you will be missed.

Just noticed today's Photo of the Day on CNN.com is a fall color pic from "Bruce's Crossing, Michigan." Nice pic, even though they got the town name wrong.

By Pat & Glenda (Gormfrog) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 12:54 pm:

George could imagine no finer life than to arise each morning and sail all day toward an unknown goal..forever..on Lake Superior

1. Well, I couldn't find that Photo of the Day on CNN.com; I wish we had a better link!

"Nice pic, even though they got the town name wrong."

2. They must have been talking to a true native, then, 'cuz it was "Bruce's Crossing" from 1888 - 1891, and a lot of local folks still call it Bruce's Crossing, or just "Bruce's"!

Breaking news: I just found the Photo in question: (click → ) CNN Travel, Photo of the Day Wed November 2, 2011

(That will probably be a very volatile link, here today, gone tomorrow!)

So sorry to learn of George Hite's passing. His web site and FB page was one of my several daily connections to the U.P. May he rest in Peace with our Lord in his company. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

Fine pics.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 02:57 pm:

I'm not quite sure what Charlie will be wondering about all day long? I have wondered about what he was wondering about. I sorted the photos into two subsets, even and odd numbered years. I discarded the Pasty logo as a common denominator because it should be common to all of them. For the even numbered years subset, there are some years that have the obvious effect of sunlight. That is not true for the subset with the odd numbered years. All of the odd numbered years, except 2007, directly show clouds. I made the assumption that because of the very lowlight conditions in the 2007 photo (that are even mentioned in the 2007 writeup), it had to be a cloudy day, therefore, clouds were present, even though we could not see them. I was taught to think analytically, to rule in and rule out objects like that, in my years of scientific and mathematical schooling and training.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 - 07:47 pm:

Thanks for clearing that up, Marianne. The wondering was about 2007, which only Neil Harri could really settle for us. (Wondering if you were in touch with Neil :o)

Actually, the watermark is a correct answer, as it did not appear on the 1998 photo. (We had not yet started the "Big Picture" feature). Another correct answer might be, "There is no sunlight shining directly into the camera's lens" (such as in 2000)

Thanks to everybody who tunes in each morning to see if we'll keep our 14 year record intact. And also thanks to all who posted condolences regarding George Hite. I'm sure the family appreciates the outpouring of affection the online community had for our good friend from Eagle Harbor.
