Record flock of birds this morning

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 08:23 am:

Sure hope we don't have a 'bear' of a winter in the following l-o-n-g months!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 08:25 am:

Hope not either Shirley, otherwise it could make for an "unbearable" experience....

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 09:29 am:

Nice pics on this Oct. 18th. I can finally take it easy for a while. I may head up to the Tunnel of Trees by Mackinaw this weekend and maybe, just maybe, see some remaining color.

By Donna (Donna) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 10:06 am:

Great pics...I love the kids in the leaves...that's what it's all about....I gathered a bunch in a pile and took my neighbor's 2 y/o outside, and was playing with her...she was squealing like a little pig when she realized what fun! THAT made it so worth it!

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 10:07 am:

Alex, are you referring to M-119 from Harbor Springs to Cross Village? We drove it October 6th. There was hardly any color then.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 01:03 pm:

Paul...that's the road. I assume the trees were still pretty green. I know that area seems to be one of the last to change.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 01:37 pm:

Paul and Alex, that is one of my favorite 'tunnel of trees' roads any time of year, even in snow! We always went that way when visiting Mackinaw or the Soo. (from Charlevoix) ahhh memories.....

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 02:34 pm:

Thanks 4 the memories.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 03:24 pm:

Shirley and Paul, I just traveled down that road. Well, I did by google streetview. That looks like a route I would love to travel.

JH(Thumbgardener) That's how the popples and birch trees looked heading to Copper Harbor a while ago. Everything was golden.
A few trees holding on in Ontonagon. Waiting for the Tamaracks to call it winter. First they turn yellow, a true sign that fall is over. Then they turn black, a sign that winter is here.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 05:14 pm:

Go for it, JH, well worth the drive.....the 'here n there' views of Lake Michigan will take your breath away!

I know what a poplar tree is, but what's a "popple"???

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 09:31 pm:

Capt, that's the local venacular for poplar!

Even in the LP we called them popple trees.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 11:05 pm:

I've always called them poplar trees, but I've also heard them called popple.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Populus_tremuloides
"One of several species to be referred to by the common name Aspen, or American, Quaking, Trembling, Mountain or Golden aspen, the name poplar, Trembling Poplar, is used along with Quakies, Quakers, Popple, Álamo Blanco, and Álamo Temblón."

I still haven't found any thing about fish bowels though. Sorry Capt. Paul, I couldn't resist. :-)

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 11:08 pm:

Hei Capt. Paul, UP here the aspen trees are called 'popple'. The only Poplar trees that I see UP here are those tall Lombardy Poplars. Never heard of these called Popples. You're welcome. :o)

Wow, thanks Gormfrog

By Diana P. (Diana) on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 - 07:53 am:

Yes, thanks, Gormfrog. I was trying to figure out how to get to that page without resorting to a bookmark ... I have an excess of pages bookmarked! Maybe time for Autumn cleaning. ;-)
