Mike Schneider captured the fall colors through a window for us today, while James Alain headed outdoors in the Keweenaw to snap his shots of the fall leaves. Both photographers bring the colors right to your computer monitor to enjoy, long after those leaves have faded and fallen from their branches. The color show here UP North is over for the most part, but here on the Pasty Cam, we're going to enjoy the wind down just a little longer. I hope that's OK with everyone. ;->

That's wonderful!! There's nothing like the colors of the UP in autumn. I live in Minnesota and have traveled up north along the shores of Lake Superior here, and there's still nothing like the color that we witness UP there. Awesome shots!!!!

Forgot to say that I especially like the window picture!!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 08:09 am:

Awesome colour pics!!!

We didn't see this much colour (or that much blue sky) last week, but in a few spots there were some trees still showing autumn's paintbrush. A very nice change from the brown we'll start seeing in SE Texas over the coming weeks....

Just beautiful photos today ... and yes, the window perspective is neat! Autumn is amazing! :)

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 08:17 am:

Beautiful, as usual! The window photo reminds me of a painting I did for our son several years ago. He lived in a townhouse with no window in the kitchen, so he asked if I would do a painting he could hang over his sink to appear to be a window. So I did a painting of a laker on Lake Erie (he lived in the Cleveland area at the time) and my husband made a frame for it with slats making the panes so that it looked just like a window.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 09:03 am:

Good Morning. I love today's pictures, especially the vivid colors in the window photo. Thank you. :-)

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 09:20 am:

Very nice...the last one looks like a painting.

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 09:37 am:

What super pics..thanks so much!

By Donna (Donna) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 10:01 am:

LOVE the window picture....and what a wonderful idea to paint a window for over a windowless kitchen sink....Shirley....I don't have a window....(Hint! LOL)

And there's still plenty of color....the empty tree limbs against that gun metal grey sky, with the sun shining on them....it's so beautiful....The sun shining on fresh snow is like a field of diamonds...we've much beauty to come!

Hi
Thanks so much for the virtual color tour; it's pretty much the only one, for up north, that I will get this year. My mom & I went up to our place in Cheboygan last weekend. Saturday there was high winds and intermittent rain; there was some color in places. Sunday it cleared off but the high winds Saturday and Satuday night took down most leaves except the green-brown leaves of the oak trees. It was that way all the way back downstate.

Pertaining to the high wind, ther were a couple of unique events for us. First, a tree blew down across the road in front of us as we were poking around on some back roads near Mackinaw City. Second, a freighter anchored off-shore (we are on Lake Huron) Saturday night; we could see the lights shining when we went to bed. That was something we had not seen in all the years we had been coming up there.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 12:13 pm:

The lights shining on the freighter at night are called "Harbor Lights" & they are very pretty. Have you heard the song Harbor Lights? It's a song that was popular in the 40's or 50's. Brings a tear to my eyes every time I hear it but it is a very nice song.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 01:28 pm:

Donna, nothing would please me more than to do a "window" painting for you, unfortunately arthritis and age brought my hobby to a halt.:( It was a soothing pastime while it lasted.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 01:31 pm:

Cheryl, I love Harbor Lights too!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 01:44 pm:

Shirley, I have the same problems with old Art Ritis. Has made me stop making things in my shop. Now with winter on I am stuck in the two shops in the house. At least they are heated. Shout out to Danbury. Wish I could visit Germany again. Too old and crippled to fly again. Besides at my age I would need my own private comode. I am like an old dog now. Have to mark my territory.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 02:31 pm:

More great Autumn pics. Thank you.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 02:54 pm:

Wasn't "Harbor Lights" from a John Wayne movie in the early 40's?

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 03:37 pm:

Hi
I have never heard the term "harbor lights" to refer to a freighter's lighting at night. The lake freighters are lit up like a Christmas tree as they steam past at night...they are not in a harbor. In this case, the boat in question kept it's lights lit while anchored in lake Huron, nowhere near a harbor. A good safety precaution, since a salty went by, upbound towards the Mackinac Bridge, in the night. We could tell it was a salty because they don't have as many lights.

Sorry, I haven't heard the song Harbor Lights either. There is a line from the Jimmy Buffet song "It's Been a Lovely Cruise":
'And those harbor lights, Lord, they're coming into view;
We said our farewells much too soon'

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 04:29 pm:

This song by Van Morrison always reminds me of "The Big Lake".

Into The Mystic

We were born before the wind
Also younger than the sun
Ere the bonnie boat was one as we sailed into the mystic
Hark, now hear the sailors cry
Smell the sea and feel the sky
Let your soul and spirit fly into the mystic

And when that fog horn blows I will be coming home
And when the fog horn blows I want to hear it
I don't have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And magnificently we will fold into the mystic

When that fog horn blows you know I will be coming home
And when that fog horn whistle blows I got to hear it
I don't have to fear it

And I want to rock your gypsy soul
Just like way back in the days of old
And together we will fold into the mystic

Mikie...LOL ;D

By Mike Schneider (Upmike) on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 - 08:01 pm:

Beautiful color James! I love the fall, so many colors, the smells and the cooling temps. Thanks for the kind comments!

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Thursday, October 20, 2011 - 08:36 am:

Love all those colors, still some leaves hanging on here on the coast.
Cheryl, Just catching up on my Pasty notes reading and saw your "Harbor Lights" reference. Brought back memories of my father singing that song to my mother (he sailed on the lakers for many years - both coal and oil fired - turbine and up-and-downers!) We always thought of the "harbor lights" as the actual lights of a harbor welcoming the sailors to home and safety.
Sunday off Bete Gris
This was taken Sunday evening of what looks to be a 1000 footer off the Bete Gris bay riding on the hook waiting for winds to lower.
Thanks all.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, October 20, 2011 - 02:59 pm:

Thank you, Notroll, for the picture! I was hoping to see some photos of ships in safe harbor this year. Do they ever set anchor in the wide parts of the Portage?
