Although 2001 is a close second, with the rays off the clouds (and the fact I know the photographer ;-)

By Diana P. (Diana) on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - 08:04 am:

My favorite has got to be 2005 ... watching the sunset from the dock, framed by trees. :)

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - 08:06 am:

I HAVE THE ANSWER, ALL OF THEM EXCEPT FOR 1998!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - 08:11 am:

2005 would have been my 2nd choice Diana, for that very reason :)

And UC, you are so right!!

I just realised that I hit the trifecta this week of "Birds". I guess that means I have reached my quota for a while....

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - 03:04 pm:

2007 is my favorite. It may not have the stunning colors of some of the others, but it's my choice because it was sent to me by Sue Haralson as a way to offer her sympathy. She was out kayaking on Torch Lake the evening my Mom died and snapped this photo. Her note to me said that as she watched the sun go down, she was thinking of my Mom, how this was her sunset and it was her (Sue's) job to capture it for me....Thank you Sue, it's still beautiful to me four years later!

Well, DNRE announced today that the that fall colors will be in their peak on the last week of September. I knew it was going to be early. For those of you planning to see the painted landscape, just giving you a head's up.
The trees are turning.

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - 05:19 pm:

Great shot for your mom, Mary. Sue did good. What a great tribute to your mom.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - 06:44 pm:

Historically, peak colours in the U.P. are mid-September to mid-October on any given year, so a "last week of September" peak doesn't seem that out of the ordinary. Usually, the first trees can't wait to turn and start in early August every year. There were plenty of premature turners along 26 between Painesdale and Mass City when we were up there earlier this month, but that happens every year and sometimes even earlier.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - 07:09 pm:

You're right about the leaf colors, Paul. I haven't said much when it's been brought up. One, I never saw any leaves turning. Two, it's a rare year that we don't see them turning when we're there in August. And this year we were there later.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - 10:52 pm:

We have a small Maple at the end of the driveway that starts turning usually the end of July. Like I said before, is this an early fall or do we have an early tree? Now we'll make like a tree and leave. Sorry. :o)

By C Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, August 31, 2011 - 11:17 pm:

I've camped at Hog Island; it's so beautiful. Calgon, take me there....

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, September 1, 2011 - 06:57 am:

That was good, Ken, in an awful kind of way. ;-)
