Fence at Hecla Cemetery vandalized
August 20, 2011
By Garrett Neese (gneese@mininggazette.com), The Daily Mining Gazette

CALUMET TOWNSHIP - Police are seeking information on recent vandalism of a volunteer-built fence at the Hecla Cemetery in Calumet Township.

Sometime before Thursday, two fence rails, a 4-by-4 foot post and a metal sign post were damaged at the cemetery's Union Street entrance.

"It's lower than whale doo-doo to mess with a cemetery," said Michigan State Police Sgt. Barry Koljonen.

The fence was built about a month ago in an effort led by the Knights of Columbus. The Upper Peninsula Power Co. also donated a truck, and one of its drivers donated his time, said Gene Niedholdt of the Calumet Knights of Columbus.

The fence is part of a recent push by the Houghton-Keweenaw Genealogical Society to improve the cemetery, which was founded in 1860. Last year, Boy Scouts cleared the overgrowth from the perimeters of the cemetery. A landmark stone that had been overturned and sprayed with graffiti was also restored to its rightful place and condition.

"They've been in there constantly working on checking stones," Niedholdt said. "They've got a book of who's buried in there for anyone who comes up and is interested."

Anyone with information on who caused the damage is asked to call the MSP at 337-2211 or 337-5145. Under state law, there are enhanced penalties for operating an ORV on or across a cemetery or burial land.

Niedholdt said the Knights of Columbus would be back out sometime next week to rebuild the fence.

Calumet Township will donate a metal post to replace the one that was bent.

"It's kind of disheartening, because it's been a lot of volunteer work," he said. "They're doing something really good out there, and to see that, it makes your heart sink."

Wow, I read the comments on that news article and it seems there were some very negative comments about my hometown area. If you have nothing nice to say.......I'm sure your mother taught you the rest of that saying.

Which is that, Cindy??

I clicked on the link in Hollidays post that takes you to the news article about the tornado in Ontonagon. There was a spot for comments above the pictures.

You must be talking about the "daily rant" feature on TV-6, Cindy. I usually read them just for a good laugh from people that have nothing better to do with their lives..... ;-)
