Good morning from Minnesota!!

It's going to be another beautiful day with rain moving in tonight. Oh well, didn't want to water again anyway. Hot by the weekend.

Good morning to all, and especially Deb. Two days in a row. Cool here in Berkley. Must be cold in Troy since they are going to burn books to stay warm. Berkley library doing well because of the people on the board. Smartest man in the world is a board member. When I was a kid the Lincoln school in Hubbell would have library day. There would be books that you could take out. I think they came from the Calumet library. Mom and I would request books and read together. Now I enjoy books on tape, or on disc.

The copper in 2001 was discovered at Great Sand Bay in Lake Superior and can be viewed at the Quincy Mine 1894 Hoist building. The one that was stolen and moved to Marquette was found in a field near the Quincy Mine location.

Also, the 2001 specimen is vein copper, while the other piece is float copper.

So, Cap't, what does that mean? Maybe I'll get to see them in person next visit. So what specimen is supposed to be in the Smithonium (sp) in D.C.? btw I try to use copper as part of my decorating in my place. Of course not always copper just looks copper.

Kay: The one in D.C. is the Ontonagon Boulder, discovered near present day Victoria Dam. From what I understand, it isn't even on public display at the Smithsonian, which is a pity really....

Still looking for info what's up with the Still Waters property...from yesterday's site.

The Ontonagon Boulder was discovered in Rockland and shipped down the Ontonagon River to the village. Rockland is still upset over the fact that they never got credit for the man that found it in their town. Ontonagon still takes credit for it. That's history. :)

Hi everyone-

Long time reader, first time poster. Still
learning the ins and outs of pastycam!

I moved up here a little under a year ago, and am
definitely enjoying my first summer in the
Keweenaw! I was curious if anyone knows, or could
point me in the direction of someone who'd know,
if this Saturday there is any type of memorial
occurring to mark the 45th anniversary of Ruth Ann
Miller's death in that horrible accident at
Tamarack #4? Drop me a note with any info you
might have.

Given her passing happened long before my arrival
on earth, but I come from the 'little Jessica
falling down the well" generation and recall all
the hurried lessons about well/mine/cistern/etc
safety as a child. Learning Ruth Ann's story has
not only hit home, but facinated me as a Tech
student as well. The bits and pieces I glean about
her accident are turning the gears in my head to
hopefully someday turn into a research project.

I had a reading of "Sad News From Central Mine"
dedicated to Ruth Ann done on WMTU last weekend. I
hope somewhere she heard it...

Was the Ontonogon Boulder discovered in Old Victoria?

I spelled Ontonagon wrong above,...........

The Ontonagon Boulder actually was removed from its resting place beside the west branch of the Ontonagon River near Victoria. During periods of high water in the river it would be submerged, but it was partially or totally exposed most of the time. This site is now completely underwater due to the lake created by the Victoria Dam.
