Henry Sakari was on his way to work one morning last week when he spotted this ship on the Portage, so he pulled into the Lily Pond for a better look and some photos to share with us here today. That's the State of Michigan training vessel. Part of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy, where young cadets are trained for a career on the water, whether it be in ship navigation, piloting, managing the engine, mechanical aspects of the ship or shoreside opportunities. If you're planning on making a career of sailing the Great Lakes, including Lake Superior, then this is the place to get the training you need to live that life on the water, full of adventure, travel and outdoor activities.

Hi
A nice way to start a Friday morning. There's expanded access to the Soo Locks today that I'm not able to attend, but I will be heading up north after work. And if i see this vessel cruising by our cabin on Lake Huron, now I'll know what it is.

What a outstanding shot! Really lush and green along the portage canal and what a ship! Michigan should be proud. I took the Keweenaw Star tour once on the canal and glad I did. It's gone now I believe. Can always ride the Ranger III however.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, June 24, 2011 - 05:52 pm:

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, June 24, 2011 - 08:09 pm:

Great idea UC! We could even do a four-person stack and because I thought of it, I get to be on top.

She was docked in the St. Mary's river just east of the locks today.

I'm proud to say my son-in-law was on that ship last week. He is studying in the engineering program. Has to be certified in Heating/Air Conditioning, Firefighting, Welding just for starters. He is a bright young man. Proud to call him son! He is a hard worker.

I was fortunate to photograph the first week of
their first training cruise in 2003. Not only is it
an excellent program, but they get to see some
sights most people miss. Attached are two photos
taken from the ship, arriving at Navy Pier in
Chicago, and a view of the bridge not many see.

So, it didn't like the first attempt. I'll try one-
at-a-time.

I meant to say in my first post that those are
wonderful shots by Henry Sakari.

Here's under The Bridge:
