This deer is looking at Marsha Galbraith, while she's looking through her camera lens at it, capturing a fall encounter in the woods. These creatures are so alert to their surroundings, you can tell when they first detect your presence...the head comes up at attention and those ears start twitching back and forth. Hope this one stays alert for the next month and a half or so! ;->

Marsha found another treasure in her explorations. I'm not sure if this is a small lake or a big pond, but whatever it is, there are still a few colorful trees surrounding it, along with a number that have lost their leaves already. I'm not certain, but I think the lingering color has something to do with being near the water, as I noticed here in Lake Linden, near the campground and Torch Lake, the smaller trees there are still holding onto some color, too.

The deer population is so high here deer hits are a year round season. Brings the body shops a lot of doe and keeps my husband very busy!

Thanks for using my pictures, Mary! I believe the second one was taken at one of the lakes on Pike Lake Road, south of Twin Lakes. Have a good week all!

My son hit a deer in front of Long's farm (which Uncle Chuck mentioned recently!) here in Commerce Township. VERY luckily, he hit a young doe at the height of her bound across the road. He pulled his grill out a little, but other than that, no damage to him or car. He went back to look for her, but she was gone and hopefully not hurt very much.

Beautiful photos, Marsha, especially the reflection pond! That looks like one BIG deer....long body!

Some statistics regarding deer-car accidents in Michigan: http://michigandeercrash.org/default.aspx

There is also a link for motorcycle safety, as well. Several years ago while riding my motorcycle at night, a deer ran into the middle of the road and stopped right in front of me. I had about one second to react and I decided to veer in front of the deer. Luckily, he got spooked and went back the other way.

Again, please help! With all of those car/deer collisions, we certainly need timely ambulance support.

I'm not too knowledgeable about my Michigan counties, except for those in the western and central U.P., and those listed as the top five for deer-vehicle crashes don't look very familiar to me. Are those all in the lower pen? If so, that's a bit surprising; I thought they'd have fewer deer per square mile than the the U.P., but maybe it has to do with the higher human population (and thus more cars) down there?

Uncle Chuck, how are you voting more than once a day? I have only been able to vote once a day. It doesn't even help to go to a second browser, they know I've already voted today!

Lovely fall scenes! Is it just me, or is that deer huge in the body?

My husband, my oldest son, and I have all hit a deer. The one I hit was in the east Texas piney woods, pulling a boat. The one my husband hit was in northeast Wyoming, on the Interstate, at speed. And the one my oldest son hit was on I-75, just south of the Big Mac. I am almost thinking that it's not a matter of if, but when you hit a deer. In fact, the state police now say it is much better to actually hit the deer than to swerve, because you are less apt to be seriously injured if you just hit the deer. Tap the brake to begin slowing down, and brace for impact. Most of the very serious injuries or deaths are from people who swerve, trying to miss the deer. That is, of course, hitting it with a car or truck. Motorcyclists hitting deer are not faring well, especially this year. Hitting a deer is not nearly as bad as hitting a bear or a moose or a cougar! Keep your eyes peeled on the road in front and the sides of the roads for wild animals!

Hope to see the big daddy deer next month!

Marianne, I don't know, I just did it again, and it took it, I heard the pepsi pouring and it said, thanks for voting.

The hard winters and wolves takes a toll on the deer population in the UP.
http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,1607,7-153-10363_10856_10905-150249--,00.html

I found this on the web.

UP 2005 = 336,000
UP 2008 = 320,000

NLP 2005 = 498,000
NLP 2008 = 610,000

SLP 2005 = 868,000
SLP 2008 = 904,000

Net estimated change = +128,000 deer

Beautiful pictures, Marsha. What a lovely time of year in the U.P.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Tuesday, October 19, 2010 - 06:19 pm:

it appears to me that a lot of the UP deer are migrating south. Do they have to pay a toll at the bridge or just cross over ?
