I have said for many years that when I retire I will be on Brockway Mountain looking at the beautiful colors in the fall. Well, I retired from 32 years of teaching in June, and it's time to plan a fall trip to the Keweenaw, which I have never had the chance to do before. So, I was wondering if I could have some advice about when to expect a good display of fall colors. I was thinking of maybe the first week in October. Any opinions about that would be greatly appreciated.

Good morning!! Love the weathered wood picture, and At the End of the Day is spectacular! Also love the Hovering Hummer.

Thanks for the great start to the day. Have a great day! The week is half over already. It's still a little dark here. Not a good sign!!

Good Morning from Linn Co. Iowa! Cool, sunny and 50 degrees...Love It!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 07:46 am:

Cindy--Good for you! I'm back from a seven week stay in
Michigan (six weeks in the UP) and ready to start the school year.
One of my cousins, a teacher and artist, said that it was such a
thrill to be able to travel during the autumn months the first year
after she retired. She felt like she was playing hookey.

I have a lot of PastyCam entries to catch up on!

By Yooperguide (Huntandfish) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 08:07 am:

Cindy, it might be an early fall display this year. The colors are usually at their peak the first two weeks of October. This year might be sooner.

By Joy Brewer (Joy) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 08:55 am:

Cindy, when I was home the last week of July and the first week of August, there were trees already turning-between the Porkies and Houghton. I found the second week of October has been good. I know my boys would be wearing snow boots quite a few Halloweens.

Enjoy your day, everyone!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 08:58 am:

I really did not want to say to much but, the colors are starting to change in some areas around here. (the u.p.)

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 09:00 am:

Oh Yeah! 32 years of teaching, I applaud you with a standing ovation. What did you teach?

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 09:09 am:

Wow! Thanks for the quick responses to my question. I can't wait to see the color up there.
I was an art teacher for 15 years, then a third grade teacher for two years, and finished out my career after 17 years in fourth grade. It's going to be very strange for me to not be in my classroom on September 7th. I'm glad I have such a fun trip to look forward to.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 09:25 am:

Cindy congratulations on all those years teaching. You've certainly earned a trip UP north. I'm hoping later in September will be just right this year for fall colors. I'm on pins & needles waiting for this trip. Got sad news last evening when my youngest daughter called that her husband was released from his pain and struggles. Was just 51 years old but made bad lifestyle choices. Rest in peace Ray.

Kay, I am sorry for your families loss... Cindy, congratulations on your retirement!! I have been retired for a year and have had a blast! Lots of things to do... Enjoy your trip to the UP in the fall, the colors are awesome!!!

Kay sorry for your loss

Sorry for your family's loss Kay.
Mr. Deb

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 12:44 pm:

Cindy...congrats on your retirement! It's hard to guess the time when the leaves will be at their peak for color, but like a number of others have said, usually around the first week of October is a good guess. But it could be the last week of September, too. Wish I could give you a better answer. :-)

Kay ~ I am so sorry for your families loss. It's hard to lose someone anytime, but even harder to lose them when they aren't that old, poor life choices or not. My sympathies....

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 02:21 pm:

Kay..sincere condolences to your daughter and you.

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 03:48 pm:

Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for your input about my fall color trip. I think we are going to go for the first week in October. I love the Keweenaw, no matter what, so I can't think of a better way to spend the beginning of the next phase of my life.
Kay, I am also very sorry for your loss. It's never easy when you lose someone.
Thanks for the good wishes for my retirement. I'm really looking forward to this trip. By the way, I wrote a few months ago and told everyone that the contest for the Copper Country Animal Shelter inspired me to adopt a dog. Well, my dog is coming on the trip with us. I'm sure Boomer is going to have a great time, too.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 04:09 pm:

Good pics. Some scenic and some historic.

By Yooperguide (Huntandfish) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 04:44 pm:

Boomer will love it UP here, Cindy. The UP has big priorities;

1) The dog
2) The pick-up truck
3) Cold beer in the fridge
4) A nice TV

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 04:45 pm:

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 06:00 pm:

Thanks, Davey. ;O)

Sorry to hear about your loss, Kay.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 06:15 pm:

Kay, I'm so sorry for the loss your family has suffered. Poor Jane. Please tell her I'm thinking about her.

Cindy, congrats!!!! Wish it were me, but would only want to be this age and not older, lol!!

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 06:54 pm:

Congratulations on your retirement,Cindy. I retired 2 years ago last June and we came north the last week of Sept. It was beautiful when it wasn't raining. But it was a great trip.

Kay, so sorry for the loss of your son-in-law. God has a better place for him.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 09:15 pm:

Thanks everyone for your sympathy. I know my Jane is strong and she apperciates all your loving concern for her and her daughter. Cindy you'll have a grand time with the dog. I'm preparing my cat for his trip UP with me too. Got a cat carrier and he's checking it out as I write. Should be interesting at least. Maybe I'll get photos and figure out how to send them on when I return home.

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 10:15 pm:

There's a Maple tree at the end of our driveway that has turned color and lost about 1/2 of its leaves already. That tree usually has one branch on the south side that really gets red leaves early. But, this year the whole tree has turned. Is that an omen? Maybe Cornell is in for an early Fall/Winter. But that grass is sure healthy! Been getting lots of time riding the Cub Cadet, takes about 4 hrs. to mow it.
Had cataract surgery Tues. morning. Talk about a new look at life! All the colors are so bright and beautimous!

As someone I knew said after they got their eyes repaired as well; "I'm seeing things I shouldn't be seeing"!!!
