Our neighbor in Eagle River, Mary Long, sent me the top photo including some of her ancestors, taken sometime in the early 1900's, along with a note:

Bill
My Great Uncle Bill (William C. Long) is 2nd from the left on the top row. He was born in 1890 and his sister Katherine Long (former postmistress) is 3rd from the right on the top row. She was born in 1887. Their father was also William Long and they had a first cousin Katherine Long. I'm pointing that out to let you know there are more than one of each name in Eagle River history.
Paul Meier posted Katherine's picture on the Pasty Cam a few years ago:
Katie
Seeing the postmistress picture of Katie Long many years later, I'm wondering if Mary's aunt was the third or the fourth from the right?

Maybe Mary could clear up that mystery. But now, let me give you another one...

Around the same time period when the Eagle River picture was taken, my wife's Great Uncle Frank was a student downstate in Oakland County. One of his shop projects has become known over the years as "The Thing". Nobody can seem to identify exactly how it was to be used. Any ideas?

Don't forget to vote today in the Shelter Challenge, and help Copper Country Humane Society keep moving closer to the $10,000 prize to be awarded next month!

Have a good week :o)

I think but am not sure, that it looks like a tool used in weaving, that blocks the newly threaded yard against the loom threads. Oh well if I am wrong remember it was only a guess :)

Greetings:

This is a test, right?

Katherine Long born in 1887 and a first cousin named, Katherine Long born(?). 1887 to 1987 is 100 years. What year was the picture taken of the Katherine Long on the steps of the house?

My vote is the fourth from the right. The facial features seem closer.

No idea on the "What is it". My guess is that it might have something to do with setting traps.

My hubby says they are wheat flails, for separating the grain from the chaff.

By Diana P. (Diana) on Sunday, March 7, 2010 - 08:57 am:

Any chance "The Thing" could be large ice tongs?

I notice that Katie Long has her hair parted down the middle in the postmistress pic, so I would guess she is the girl with her hair parted in the middle in the school pic--the third girl from the right.

The sun is still shining, have a great day. :)

Can you squeese together the tips of the mystery thing? If so, then it might be the tool to fork out laundry from the hot water. Used when you used to do laundry without modern technology. My mom used to use this tool when she laundered with a half-automatic machine. It rotated the laundry in it but then you had to fork clolthes out of it to rinse. It had a mangle-sort of water removing thing on top of the machine.

Best wishes from sunny and snowy Finland!

How about
Tongs for when no one will pass the sugar cubes?
Really big salad servers?
Used to pick up filthy boys by the collar and deposit them in their bath?
Two handed Castanets?
Really hard nut cracker - (put it on the floor and jump on it with both feet with the nut in between)?
Garlic Press?
I noticed the rate of voting slowed after the address stopped being posted daily so if it's still permissable to post it here:

And no clue on "the thing"...but I do like all the guesses....Laundry Assistant sounds really feasible! (OMG...that sounds like politician-speak!)

Richard...you forgot chopsticks for all that Chinese food served in Eagle River.

By James Alain (Charlevoix) on Sunday, March 7, 2010 - 10:50 am:

In the 1950s there was a hit song called "The Thing", which referred to some mysterious unknown object "out there floating in the bay". I can only assume this thing is not the same one!

Just look at how nice those kids were dressed for school. Today they go to school with holes in there pants that cost $100.00 or more.
What a change

By Paul H. Meier (Paul) on Sunday, March 7, 2010 - 11:49 am:

JT,
It is not a test. The Long's tended to like certain names. The other Katherine was born in 1877, daughter of William's brother Henry. Henry also had a son named William and William had a son named Henry. That is just a sample.
The picture of Katie on the Post Office steps was taken around 1960. I don't have the print with the date readily available - sorting photos is a pending retirement project.
I am a descendant of the elder Henry which makes Mary Long and I cousins to about the 3rd or 4th level. Thanks for the photo Mary!

Is 'The Thing' for pressing mens slacks?

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Sunday, March 7, 2010 - 02:12 pm:

I have no clue what the "thing" is. I like the laundry thing guess so far. Although, the finish would not last too long getting stuck in water all the time, so I'm not sure....I hope we will get the answer before the day is done so we'll be able to sleep tonight.

By Jim Nicholas (Jimn) on Sunday, March 7, 2010 - 03:08 pm:

No idea what the thing is. Heard you on the internet adviser yesterday Charlie. They do good work.

stove. Hinged so you won't ever loose one.

By Frank Brinkman (Febrinkman) on Sunday, March 14, 2010 - 10:56 pm:

I remember the post mistress. My dad, Slim Brinkman was the Rural Route Post Office Delivery Man. He would drive up, take a bag of mail out of the war surplus jeep, a yellow Dodge sedan and a blue Chevy pickup. If I remember correctly that would have been in 1948 thru 1952. After dropping the mail off he would drive across the bridge that is currently closed. I have fond memories of those days in the early spring or summer time when Dad would let me ride with him on his route from Ahmeek to Copper Harbor and back.
