Located on the south shore of the U.P., 60 miles west of St. Ignace and 14 miles east of Manistique, is the Seul Choix (pronounced Sis-shwa) Point Lighthouse, photographed here today by Lynn Virtanen. Sitting on Lake Michigan, in a small harbor near the town of Gulliver, this light is said to be haunted, with reports from both visitors and people who work there, of instances where items have been moved, footsteps have been heard in the residence quarters and on the steps of the lighthouse. There have even been reports of a strong smell of cigars, leading folks to believe that the lighthouse keeper is still there, living and working each day. Whether he is or not, this light has been designated as a Michigan Historic Site and a Michigan Historic Site National Historic Landmark. Operated by the Gulliver Historical Society, the museum is open from Memorial Day through Mid-October for tours. Looks like another U.P. destination that I'll be adding to my list of places to see.

Lynn's last two photos give us another look at the blue-tinged ice bordering the shores of Lake Michigan, similar to the piles we featured on Wednesday. This pile-up was photographed in the Gulliver area. I wonder how many miles of this shale ice there is along the shores of this Great Lake?

Speaking of historical, someone had sent a photo of Seul Choix from the early 1900's, and I just haven't gotten around to doing a Shoebox Memory with it on the weekend. Maybe the lightkeeper in this shot is the one with the cigar :o)

I love the light house & the blue ice! Thank you, Lynn V & Mary!

BTW, why is the ice blue? I always thought the lakes were blue because of the sandy bottoms, & the refraction/reflection of the sun, but that wouldn't affect the ice color?

The many hues of blue are sure out there when the sun is shining. Wow....gorgeous stuff!

Why is ice blue??
Here is the answer....

We view all this information reverently, as if it means "understanding" or "wisdom:, but it doesn't....no matter, nature is awesome!

Ice is cold, red ions in the light are hot, blue ions in light are cold, hot and cold are opposites and therefore react with each other very intensely. Ice is much heavier than light so it can absorb a lot of hot red light ions and not melt. The cold blue ions in light can leak right through so you can see them making the ice look blue. Some actually help keep the ice cold! That's why it's not good to put ice cubes in your beer. It'll turn GREEN. (blue and yellow make green) Not many people like green beer. Tastes funny.

Rowdy, that was one of the most well thought out analyses I've seen in quite some time. Those science types can't fool us, we know how the world works! And thanks for the laugh!

Great pictures. The lighthouse is very impressive, 2.

Interesting. In the old photo which Charlie posted, it looks like someone is standing inside the railing near the top of the lighthouse, too.

I just got home from my trip to the Copper Country. We were just at this lighthouse yesterday taking photographs. It's really a pretty light. I was surprised at how little snow there was there and along U.S.2 on the way to the bridge. We really enjoyed our trip and we hope to be back up sometime this summer. Nice pictures, Lynn.
