When I had my first look at these two photos from Robert C. Wetton, I had to shake my head and blink my eyes several times. Then I realized that I wasn't seeing double, but that the lake out in Bootjack was just so calm that it was a perfect mirror when RCW snapped these photos a few days ago. So now the question is...which photo is upside down and which photo is right side up?

On a sidenote: It always amazes me how much different the weather can be only a few miles away. As of this writing, Lake Linden and Bootjack were still bare of snow, having received a few dustings, but nothing that stayed on the ground long. While Laurium/Calumet had several inches on the ground, with everything covered in white. I know it's inevitable that we will get snow and plenty of it, but right now I'm liking the advantage of living in the "gully," at a lower elevation. :->

Our snowmobiles may get some miles come the mid part of next week. Weather reports say Eastern Iowa has good chances for a potent snow storm.

By Serena Sturm (Serena) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 08:24 am:

Very pretty pics today!

Janie... I'm jealous!! Lower MI isn't getting much of the white gold yet. Last year we were riding on opening day this year we have to wait a few weeks.

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 08:29 am:

I'm betting the second picture is upside down from the way the wooden access steps are reflected. Beautiful reflections in any case!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 08:36 am:

Serena, our weather reporters also have a way of predicting weather that sounds too good to be true. lol!

By RCW (Rcw) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 08:37 am:

Richard got that correct, the first photo is the correct one. I have to give the credit for taking it to MRS RCW however.

By Deb L. (Lakegirl) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 08:50 am:

Love the pictures, makes me miss camping! Lite and I mean lite snow in Duluth, but cold. Making good ice for ice fishing though!

By Dorothy Stewart (Bootjackbabe) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 09:15 am:

Yikes---a different picture this morning. Woke up to SEVERAL inches of snow here in Bootjack. Guess I will have to get out the old "snow queen" and clear the driveway before heading out.The outdoor decorations really look good now. A very pretty sight in "paradise".

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 09:16 am:

Wonderful pictures. Hard to imagine these were taken a few days ago. W. Hancock has gotten at least 6" overnight and will continue through tomorrow. Looking like a winter wonderland out there right now!

By Mona Grigg (Islandantique) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 09:43 am:

Yes, the second picture is upside down. Look at the rocks on the left.

By David S. (Yooperdfs) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 10:17 am:

I would say the second picture is upside down simply because the lower half is a little brighter.

By Jim Nicholas (Jimn) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 10:22 am:

GREAT PICTURES. LOOKS LIKE A PLACE I WOULD LIKE TO SPEND A LOT OF TIME IN THE SUMMER. NUMBER TWO UPSIDE DOWN. LOOK AT THE BIRCH TREE ON THE LEFT AND SEE HOW MUCH CLEARER IT IS ON THE BOTTEM HALF. GOD BLESS.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 10:54 am:

RCW, what a beautiful place to spend the summer! Can you get into it in the winter? I imagine it would be quite beautiful.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 11:56 am:

I love those pictures and I somehow knew they were Robert's. Don't ask me how? Great job, Robert!

In case you're wondering what it looks like here in the Keweenaw today, I copied a snapshot of the Bridge Cam a few minutes ago.

What a difference a day makes!

Yeah...there is snow in Baraga!

Is that one of the cabins that Chet Wetton used to rent?? I remember being in it many times. He had the old caboose there too...As kids, Chet helped us feed peanuts to the chipmunks...he was one cool guy!!

By Lisa R. (Sisugirl) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 12:44 pm:

Great pics today. It took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on there. As for the bridgecam... Oh I miss snow! I know you all will be sick of it in a couple of months, but it sure is pretty. Have a warm and cozy weekend, all!

Any comment(s) on the weather in Houston?

By RCW (Rcw) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 01:13 pm:

Yes Donna that is the log cabin my Dad built in 1928. Actually we still do rent it out all summer. And also we can remember your family from those days. Dad sure had a way with the chippys. I don't know if you knew but he passed away in 2005 at age 100!!!!What a guy he was. Fran we can get in there but its too darn cold.

By Laurie B. (Ratherberiding) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 01:27 pm:

Love the bridge cam pic. Wish we were home!

By Interested Visitor (Tangobravo) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 01:49 pm:

I think that picture two is upside down and right to left. Your favorite photo editor should prove this out.

Any comment(s) on the weather in Houston?

Well, for a former yooper and snow lover, it's paradise!! For the natives here, it seems like 2012 has come a bit early....... ;-)

Out here in the country, its not bad at all just a nice snowfall, but in downtown the visibility is down to 1/8 mile at times. And, they are expecting snow accumulation on the beaches in Galveston!!

Climate chaos at its best....

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 03:37 pm:

Capt. Paul, I was waiting to hear your account of what's going on down Houston-way, as I have not heard any news lately. I did read on another board, from a lady who lives in the SW Houston, and saw a couple of pictures of her apartment's parking lot, etc. That's pretty amazing, but then, since it is apparently a record for earliest snowfall down there, I guess it is to be expected?

I'm guessing from your statement about out here in the country, that you did decide to take the day off? That sounds like the safe way to me, given the people's lack of icy road driving skills down there, coupled with the Dept of Transportation total lack of ability to care for the roads under those conditions. It looks like they will have to break out the sand pretty soon, to apply to the roadways.

Excellent pics! Seems it's snowing all over Michigan. The white stuff's in Traverse City.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 06:41 pm:

Instead of moving the middle of January, we are moving up in a couple of days. We were hoping the snow would hold out til then, but, at least it will not like be moving in the middle of january. ;0)

By Mike (Upboundeh) on Friday, December 4, 2009 - 06:48 pm:

The photos are something else..talk about reflection and a sheet of glass..Wow! Looks as though the good Lord has blessed the UP and others with White Gold! We got nothin but kinda cold here in Ohio.

By Donna (Donna) on Saturday, December 5, 2009 - 07:11 am:

Chet made it to 100!! He should have been eternal! He had a way with everything! And a GOOD way, that is sorely lacking today! He would be a role model, by far!

I was a kid then, but I remember Chet well...he had a heart of gold, and made friends with everyone and everything....We all LOVED going there...always such a great time!

I will always have a warm heart when thinking about those times....Blessings.

By Ron Clark (Yellowkayak) on Monday, December 7, 2009 - 09:47 am:

When I reflect on my summer vacations, I see Chet's cabin. In the early 50's, he had a little rowboat with a leak in it. We called it "Sinkworthy". True to it's name, it sunk one day and my cousin, Mary Bernard, swam out to get me.
