Good morning from Mishawaka IN. A little frosty this morning but sunny. Where is Mt. Arvon located?

By Bob Tiura (Bobtiura) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 08:38 am:

Mt Arvon is located in the Huron Mountains, Baraga County, about 15 miles due east of L'Anse.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 09:39 am:

What were you doing 46 years ago today? Today is the 46th anniversary of the assasinatin of President John F Kennedy. I must be old if I can remember that.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 09:56 am:

Wonderful photos. Regarding 46 years ago, I was in the 3rd grade at Blessed Sacrament School in Midland when someone came to the classroom door and told our teacher Mrs. Lake to turn the TV on (it was used for watching educational programming) because President Kennedy had been shot. Then all the grades (1-8) went down to the church sanctuary (now the gym) and Rev. DuRussel led us all in praying the Rosary for the President. On our way back to our classrooms, I heard a janitor say that Kennedy had died.

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 10:02 am:

Good Morning everyone. 41 and cloudy here in Houghton. 46 yrs ago, I was in Detroit coming out of a shoe store with my mom and relatives when a woman came running out of the store screaming that President Kennedy has been shot.
My mom thought the woman was nuts, got back to my aunts house to watch the news report from Walter Cronkite.

By NKR (Nkr) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 10:15 am:

Cindy, I was changing my 5 month old sons diapers when Walter Cronkite came on with the news bulletin that the President had been shot.

By Greta Armata (Gretania) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 10:16 am:

The day of the assassination we were home from school - I think it was a snow day in Ironwood. I remember my dad coming home for lunch and he didn't go back to work. We spent the rest of the day watching things unfold on TV.

By Bob Tiura (Bobtiura) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 10:21 am:

I was in Houghton that day, getting a haircut at a shop on Sheldon Avenue, near Franklin Square. I was a freshman at Michigan Tech. The weather that day was sunny and fairly warm, so I had walked the mile each way for the haircut. (I have no idea what the name of the shop was). We heard the news on the radio as it first came out. Wadsworth Hall shut the TVs off at 11 PM every night down in the new snackbar, so that night I stayed up almost all night listening to radio reports of the investigation as it unfolded. I probably didn't make it to any classes the next morning!

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 11:13 am:

I was coming from class at Wayne State University in Detroit and saw the flag being lowered. Took the 12th Street bus home where someone said what had happened. That was the only sound on that crowded bus for the entire ride to Wyoming and Fenkell.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 11:14 am:

Nkr: You mentioned Walter Cronkite, and just wanted to say I saw the video clip years later of him announcing that Kennedy had died, and removed his glasses as he apparently got a little emotional. Many, many of us around the U.S. did, I'm sure.

By Nancy DeGuire (Nancyd) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 11:23 am:

I was in 6th grade, Mrs. Honkala's class in Hancock. I also remember warm weather, we were outside playing kickball. A Janitor came to tell us and we thought it was a bad joke. When we went inside, Mrs. Honkala told us also. We went home and spent the next couple of days in front of the TV. I saw Oswald shot and ran to the kitchen to tell my Mom.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 11:30 am:

I was on my way to class at college and we all were afraid the Cubans or the Russians killed Kennedy. Skipped class and went home in my 1949 rusted out Ford that didn't have a radio to watch the tv coverage.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 12:18 pm:

I got out of a 1:00PM math class in ol' Hubbell Hall just minutes before 2:00PM (EST) and crossed the street to the Memorial Union Building to find everyone glued to every TV set in the building. I arrived just in time to see Walter Walter Cronkite's live TV coverage of the events, shortly followed by his emotional announcement that Kennedy had died.

See photo from MTU's Keweenaw Digital Archives → MTU mid campus, circa 1961. Hubbell Hall is on the right, with the white roof, and MUB on the left, just across US41. (Yes, US41 ran right between the two buildings back then!)

P.S.: I never did understand why they failed to preserve historic old Hubbell Hall! A darned shame!

By Ray Laakaniemi (Rlaakan) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 01:30 pm:

I was working at Ohio Northern University when the rumors started spreading. I went out to my car and just when the announcement came that the president had died, my car radio died. Much later I got to tour the Texas School Book Depository which has been left just as it was that day. It is just a very short distance from the building to the street.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 02:10 pm:

I really do not remember where I was, but Bill said he was on his way home from school, 10th grade and walked by his friends house and the friends mom was on the front porch crying and that is when Bill was told what happened.

TO MAIJA:
Where by 12th. street did you live? I grew up on Louise and 12th. street. Our house was right on the Highland Park-Detroit borderline and the front of our house was in Highland Park and the back of the house was in Detroit. The best years of my life as a kid growing up there.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 02:48 pm:

I was in junior high Study Hall.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 02:56 pm:

Mickill: I grew up by Wyoming and Fenkell in Cooley High School district. The 12th Street bus was a direct line to Fenkell and I would catch it at Warren or Forrest, walking distance from WSU.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 03:11 pm:

I was only 7 years old when Pres. John F. Kennedy was slain. I some what remember the televised funeral for him. I am a graduate from Cedar Rapids John F. Kennedy High School '74. Years back Bob and I drove down the street in Dallas where Kennedy's shooting took place. I remember Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's murder and Ted Kennedy" 1969 drowning accident of Mary Jo Kopeche much better.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 03:51 pm:

I was in study hall at Dollar Bay High School & our principal was walking in the hall with his transistor radio on. They were announcing that President Kennedy was killed in Dallas. We went home early from school then & I watched the news coverage. I also was watching when Lee Harvey Oswald was killed live on TV. I remember watching all of the coverage of his funeral,etc... There are some things one never forgets in their lifetime & that is one moment in my life. It was certainly a sad time for everyone in our nation. (and world)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 05:13 pm:

I remember it well. I was 11 years old, in the 6th grade. We were at St. Joseph's school having some kind of a music show in the Little Gym. I don't know who's class was up on stage. I just remember my dad coming in and telling one of the nuns something. She went up on stage, told us the story, and that was the end of school for the day. I remember walking home from school and looking up at the sky, expecting to be attacked by the Russians at any minute because we didn't have a President. Silly, but when you're 11, you don't thoroughly understand. That was such a sad day. I remember sitting in front of the TV with my parents and watching the coverage. Terrible. And I remember it like it was yesterday!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 05:14 pm:

I almost forgot, I love David's picture!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 06:59 pm:

I was in the 6th grade class in Evart, Michigan. The Principal announced over the loud speakers that President Kennedy had been shot. He asked everyone to say a prayer for our President. That's back when it was ok to do that in a public school.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 07:53 pm:

What was I doing 46 years ago?? Nothing!!!!! I wasn't born yet... :-P

By Sheri (Sheri) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 08:01 pm:

I was seven years old and we were at the cemetery in Greenland, burying my great-grandfather. We were walking back up to the car when my cousin Brian, who was warming the car up to leave, turned the radio on and heard the news about the President. I have never forgotten it. It also is odd in that we had no snow and they were still doing burials that late in the year.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 08:50 pm:

I was in drama class (the only place with a t.v.) at Osborne High
School in Detroit. The principal told us to turn on the t.v. All of
us watched, and after the grim news of the President's demise
was delivered, we all went home to watch t.v. for what seemed
like days on end.

I couldn't believe it. I had raced down Gratiot Avenue in 1962 to
shake hands with JFK in 1962 when he campaigned in Detroit. It
took my mother two weeks to convince me to wash my hands
after that.

After the Bay of Pigs, while working as an usher at Ford
Auditorium in Detroit, I remember the emotions we all felt as
Van Cliburn stepped out on the stage to play with the Detroit
Symphony. Many of us thought the world was about to end.
Cliburn acknowledged our feelings and played "The Star
Spangled Banner" before the concert began. I have never
forgotten that experience.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Sunday, November 22, 2009 - 10:25 pm:

Oh my I could never forget that day! Had just gotten husband's lunch packed for 3-11 shift. We heard the news on tv and thought it was a very sick joke, couldn't be real. My 6th baby was due the next day and our oldest was in kindergarten. The baby finally arrived Dec. 14th. What a sad time for our nation but a beautiful gift of my baby Jane.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Monday, November 23, 2009 - 02:19 am:

I was working alone in my little car repair shop on Gratiot Ave. in East Pointe (then "East Detroit") I was working on electrical under the dash of a yellow 55 Chev., reached up to turn on the key, the car radio was on, heard the horrible news. Got out of the car to go next door to the tool & die shop where the owner there was working alone. He heard and was walking over to tell me. We met half way out front on the lawn.

Bobtiura: That shop might have well been my Uncle Toms shop. He had different locations through those years. Not sure unless my cousins could comment here. He did have a shop over that way. One of, or his first was on Sheldon near the bridge, north side between the old Swifts Hardware and a nightclub which the name escapes me. For some years he had a shop right in the Tech Student Union Building. I remember one visit there my cousins husband a Professor there took me down in the basement and showed me one of the early (tube type?) working computers that MTU had, maybe their first? HUGE, easily the size of a normal room! Now you can carry one in your hand!

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, November 23, 2009 - 06:50 am:

I was in my Grandma's living room, and remember her just bawling...I didn't understand why, but I knew her heart was just hurt.

By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Monday, November 23, 2009 - 06:59 am:

I was attending St. Josephs school in The Soo, and all the grades were in the Gym watching a movie we had paid .25 cents to see. One of the nuns turned off the movie and asked all students to return to our classrooms, and then they announced over the PA system that President Kennnedy had been shot and we were being dismissed. My sisters Carol and Gloria were also in that Gym so we all had the same experiance. We walked home and our crying mother informed us that Walter Cronkite had announced he was dead.

I was 12 and like Cheryl Rozman in a classroom of Mr. Dean Londo at DBHS when Mary Farmer came in to tell us. Seen Jack Ruby shoot Oswald as it happened live on our black and white Admiral TV at home, as it is tuned to WLUC TV 6 in Marquette. WLUC.. with luck U could C it.
