When summer rolls around, the fishing boats, poles and bait come out in full force. It's a relaxing, stress-relieving activity that gets you outside enjoying the Keweenaw weather. Today's photos give us a variety of ways to accomplish the feat of getting a fish to nibble on your bait. Starting with the shot from Peg Hardt, this is your typical small boat excursion, complete with man's best friend lounging in the boat, too. Moving on to the middle photo from Aladino Mandoli, standing on the dock wetting your line, is another quite common fishing stance. But the third photo snapped by Kim Beyer is the most coveted of all fishermen and women, catching the fish of the day like the young man displaying the result of his day fishing.

If you're a successful fisherman or hunter of wild game and are wondering just how you should cook it up for dinner, be sure you turn on the Sportsman Channel to watch, The Rule - Xtreme Outdoor Adventures. This show, hosted by Phil Kozak, will feature the culinary skills of a local Mohawk resident, Michelle (Shel) Mahrley and her Wildtree food products, this coming weekend. Tune in to see what Shel is going to prepare on the show on Saturday July 18th at 6:00 p.m. For more information about her appearance, visit Shel's webpage: CookingWithShel. She's also scheduled to appear on the July 25th and Aug. 1st episodes. Be sure to mark your calendar and tune in on those three dates.

Late breaking news about Shel's appearance:
There was a mix-up in production, Shel will air again on the 25th but it will be a rerun of this same episode. The August 1st show more than likely won't have her featured due to this change. Also, there's a link for viewers to watch the video (now available) from Shel's home page. Once you get there, just click on the image of the "set" and it will take you to The Rules site which has the video published. This way people don't necessarily need to remember to watch the segment Saturday, you can watch it right from the computer!

Any fishing pictures are great pictures. That little boy looks like he's very happy with his catch! Fishing is definitely a fun way to spend the day! Thanks!

I can remember catching a pike just like the one in the third photo UP at the cabin on Sand Lake, which is near Shingleton. I was just about the same age as that young man, too.

Looks like a day well spent!

By Donald Kilpela (Commodore) on Thursday, July 16, 2009 - 01:30 pm:

Back in 1947, I caught a 6-pound Northern off of Princess Point, wrapped it in a newspaper that old Mrs. Heideman gave me and walked to Rabbit Bay where my Aunt Catherine Kilpela cooked it up for dinner.

Never caught another one that big again.
