By Uncle Chuck on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 12:52 pm:

Little Betsy update, we'll be U.P. by 11/12 gettin ready for the big day on 11/15, Marty sez he knows the way to high rock bay, sez that 14 pointer is taunting him out there, Marty just wants his beef jerky, and his 3 rolls. If your hunt with young Ben and his 300 Mag, just lay low and if he YELL'S FIRE, duck, we'll have Grammpa sittin on a stump 50 yards from the truck(he can't walk to far any more) and if he has those heavy mittens on RUN!your not safe either! Hopefully grammpa Doug has the soup cookin, uncle Mike should be in camp by the 17th, unless he's with Heidi, all in all, opening day is special, we would'nt miss it, and if your cold or hungry, out huntin, come on down to little betsy, sit down, share a story with us!

Adam&Scott you comin U.P.

HI Maija

By Marty,LB on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 01:25 pm:

Uncle Chuck i'm not looking for a 14 pointer...i want that elusive 30 pointer...but maybe all i need is a pointer to find a deer. either way if i just see a deer i'll be happy even if i don't get a shot at one. can't wait the days seem to be the longest just before deer season..it will be great to get up der again. see ya later

By Ms. Katie, Il. on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 02:09 pm:

Yooper...the figures are the cutest!

By maijaMI on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 03:04 pm:

Hi Uncle Chuck

By danbury on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 03:27 pm:

Hm, I never hear a dog mentioned in all those hunt camp stories. Sounds like you heard of all those events where the dog shot the hunter.

By Uncle Chuck, LB on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 03:34 pm:

Maija, please straighten Marty out, 30 pointer? In his dreams! Oh well, we're gonna have fun, are you comin up for deer season?

By Niece Sarah, L.B. on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 03:35 pm:

Uncle Chuck- Scott has never seen a deer U.P. there and he's convinced he never will. He'd be good at napping in the woods anyway. I can't even get him to wash dishes down here so I'd doubt he'd relieve Cousin Ben of his duties. He says he wouldn't mind seeing how Ben's jeep does in the beaver pond though. He's always wanted to go to Keystone Bay. If he changes his mind last minute he'll stop by Sam's Club for some T.P. Grandpa would definitely have someone to run him up to B.K. or to Little Ceasar's for a pizza if he did come U.P. Whatever you do, don't put a gun in his hand though or you'll all want to duck!

By Uncle Chuck, LB on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 03:47 pm:

Niece Sarah, good to hear from you, I'm serious, send him up, he does'nt need a gun, I have one for him. Tell him to break Adam away from the gun store and come as well,(no machine guns allowed) we're gonna have a good time, they should be there!

By UC,LB on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 04:08 pm:

Danbury, have'nt heard those dog shootin stories, please inform us. My dog's to small to deal with the snow and cold weather, otherwise I'd bring him.

By joesyopper on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 04:32 pm:

Little Betsy group,
Were the Yoopers at your camp when they wrote the "Second Week of Deer Camp".
Have a good time. I will be in deer camp for two weeks. The first week only serious hunting. The second week cards and beer.

By Workin' in Il. on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 04:44 pm:

What kind of job do you guys have where you can take 2 weeks off for deer camp?

By L.B. on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 04:52 pm:

Priorities Workin' in Il., Priorities!

By UC, LB on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 05:01 pm:

Workin'in Il., only get the 15th,16th,and17th off, and the weekend prior, but because of my job, I can work my way back, and that's gonna take a couple of days, know what I mean?

Joesyopper, are you kiddin? I feel like I'm related to the yooper's. Hey Marty! you shot my cow!

By little betsy,fan on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 05:06 pm:

Marty, don't forget your AK57, heat seeking missle, double barrel, gernade throwing, shotgun!

By danbury on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 05:08 pm:

UC,LB: I would, but this would get kinda gross, at least to put it on site. Suffice to say it usually includes some neglectful hunter (I've never heard of a dog to LOAD a gun) and, well, picture one of these, a car with a loaded gun next to the driver and a dog jumping around somewhere in there, too. Guess some things just happen. Since I have no first hand experience with that (luckily - no, thanks), I can't come up with stories of my own. Last one I heard was a man in Alabama just recently who tried to carry puppies and a handgun, in one hand, at the same time. But he wasn't a candidate for the end-of-month tribute on pasty.cam at no time.
So long, and Waidmannsheil!

By waiting widow on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 05:15 pm:

to danbury:i think theres a few reasons that dogs have to stay home during deer season.one is the dog scent and barking would scare off the deer and the other is for his own safety as he may be shot mistaken for a deer.

By UC,LB on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 05:22 pm:

danbury; Ta'ssa' keikku!

By what is yopper on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 06:04 pm:

joesyopper whats a yopper always thought it was
yooper..or does it mean something else eh.

By maijaMI on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 06:42 pm:

Uncle Chuck: please email me. mhickcox@comcast.net

By joesyopper on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 06:47 pm:

Working in Il,
I have the perfect Yooper job. I will be collecting unemployment while at deer camp. It is something you work towards the entire year.

By danbury on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 07:03 pm:

Sorry, UC,LB: I'm a little further south. Germany, to be exact. So please, translation?
waiting widow: perhaps a good idea, but it's a different way of hunting over here. And yes, dogs occasionally get shot. Happened at the last educational hunt of the institute for game management at the department of forestry from my university. Some folks were not amused. But hey, that's why one's teached to adress what he/she shoots at, and if uncertain, not to shoot. Otherwise, license's gone in a blink, plus several grand fine, not to mention possible social consequences.

By UC, LB on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 07:28 pm:

danbury: If I spelled it correctly, "CHEERS"

By wondering on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 09:17 pm:

Yooper said one day that he is a 14 yr. old boy. Are you in school sending us these silly pics or what? Is this what my tax dollars are teaching you to do? Just checking, don't take this wrong.

By Working working on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 09:25 pm:

HUH!!!! I worked for 50 years, and never worked the entire year towards unemployment in all that time. Guess I must have been doing something wrong....Did have five weeks of vacation though...

By thinking on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 09:31 pm:

I'm thinking that yooper has a computer class in school, and making posts on here is part of his/her assignment.

By Steve,WI on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 10:41 pm:

So would that make Scott the Buckless yooper?

By yahoo in flatland on Thursday, November 4, 2004 - 10:44 pm:

Wondering,
Yooper also said he had been in a bad accident & is stuck at home, indoors for the next couple of weeks.
He can't go to school, cause he broke a leg & an arm.
Your Tax dollars are ok! :-)

By Ken and Mimi from da UP on Friday, November 5, 2004 - 12:04 am:

Hei Yooper, was cold and rainy and windy here in Cornell, too. Hang in there! I was on crutches for the first two weeks in my junior year, after spending a month in the Laurium hospital. 'Course that was waaaay back in '56.

By danbury on Friday, November 5, 2004 - 02:19 am:

Ah. Thnx! As I like to say, just for fun: Terviseks!
I'm not sure about the spelling, though. Would need an estonian to confirm.
Meaning: To your health!

By greg on Friday, November 5, 2004 - 08:37 am:

I don't think "Yooper" is a "he".

By YooperFinn, MI on Friday, November 5, 2004 - 11:58 am:

It's starting to feel more like late fall! Heikki Lunta do your snow dance :)
Finn word for cheers is kippis. Keikkua means to tilt or toss, so tässä keikkuu could translate to "down the hatch" Have a great weekend all!

By nephew ben - little betsy on Friday, November 5, 2004 - 02:48 pm:

sarah, tell scott there is plenty of room in my jeep if he wants to come up, he can even drive since i am going up after working all night, my dad and him can fight for driving time... so is everybody that is amused by our "little betsy" saga going to meet us at the gay bar for a beer one of the first nights of deer camp? uncle chuck is buying! think he will go for that marty? they have o'douls for you gramp doug! think mike will make it up on his harley for the trip with clooey riding shotgun?

By sandstone princess on Friday, November 5, 2004 - 04:50 pm:

Met a lady today at the local Quiznos who is from Gladstone. Small world. Read her Michigan Up North sweatshirt and asked her "how far UP?"
All here in Cedar Rapids, IA
PLUS fun son #1 had his own #1 son this a.m.
Weighing in at 9# 13 oz and almost 22" long! He will be taller than this Norsk Grandma in no time.
Also, for those that want more of John and Nora Dee's wedding, check out the Nov.2 journal.

By Hilary, Indiana schooling on Friday, November 5, 2004 - 07:05 pm:

I just read the message asking Heikki Lunta to do his dance while actually listening to Conga Se Menne's "Guess Who's Sitting in the Sauna (Heikki Lunta)" Maybe all this energy on the snow god will get him working. Of course, in the UP, it might be easier to get him to work than it is for me at school in Indiana. :( But you never know, right?
RANDOM FINN FACT:The Finnish equivalent of Estonia's "Terviseks" is "terveydeksi"

Ja terve kaikille tänä yönä!

Thank you for the beautiful pictures. I browsed through most of them. Finland is a beautiful country where my ancestors came from.
