Robert C. Wetton (and I'm assuming his lovely wife, Shirl), were driving through Hancock, this week and snapped a picture of the city all decked out in its Christmas attire. Pretty snowflake outlines around the street lights add a festive touch to the town for the busy shopping season at hand. I don't know about you, but seeing the lights decorating the towns and homes here locally has started to put me in the holiday mood. Probably a good thing, since Christmas is less than two weeks away! If you haven't already done your shopping, don't forget to shop at home and support your local businesses.

I really miss the Kaleva. Friendly and traditional. Hard to find anymore.

A WHILE BACK, I WAS IN DOWNTOWN HANCOCK WALKING WITH SANTA CLAUS AND A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE. I WAS WATCHING THE NEWS WHILE VISITING MY MOM, AND SAW A COMMERCIAL WITH SANTA AND THERE I WAS WALKING WITH HIM. IT WAS ABOUT 25-27 YEARS AGO I WALKED WITH SANTA AND FRIENDS. HE WAS A JOLLY OL' FELLA.

Thanks for the great picture today. My great aunt, Mary Kearney (Mimi), lived in Hancock many years ago. This shot was a familiar sight we'd see when we'd be getting closer to visiting her. The Kaleva, Nutini's, D&N (now citizens). After she passed there was a garage sale. My cousin and I had walked 'down the hill' from her house to D&N to post a flyer. We were 11 and didn't tell anyone where we were going :) They were worried but we had fun!

Richard for those of us who don't know. What is Kaleva? I googled it and came up with the following. A city in Florida; a village in Northeast MI - which claims the following; Life is slower, savored more fully, close to nature. (I truly like that claim.) The third was Kaleva was a Junkers Ju 52 transport plane, belonging to the Finnish carrier Aero O/Y. Well first of all, if you read the sign, you would see it's a cafe/bakery!! :-P

Kaleva is (was) the best restaurant in the Copper County for breakfast. The Dr. and I always used to go there before we went to classes at Tech most every morning for coffee and breakfast. We were disappointed to see that it was closed last summer when we were there. Any news of it reopening?? I heard Lindell's has reopened though; is that true??

Mary says: Yes, Capt. Paul, there is a Lindell's and it is open once again! Now you and Dr. Nat will have to go to both the Kaleva and Lindell's on your next trip! Maybe we can do lunch then. :->

You got that right Capt. Paul. I went there for breakfast while I was at Suomi in the 60's. They were the best. I hope they are open.

Eh Capt. Paul I had a pair of those foggy glasses on (pictured on this site yesterday) ...so I was not able to make out the sign!! Thanks for your help!!

It is definitely a mess around here.

I saw that Mary got in the spirit since she put some lights up at her parents house. The lights in town are always fun.

Mary says: Yes, Brooke, I hung the stars my folks used to put up. Figured since the house hadn't sold yet, that I might as well make it a "little" festive. It just doesn't seem right when it's not lit up. Thanks for noticing! :->

The Kaleva is open Capt. Paul. I even have some coupons in the CC Junior Hockey book.

Yea!!! Kaleva is open! We'll have to go there when we're in the Keweenaw this summer!

I went to the Kaleva with my Uncles in the 40s & 50s!
My Uncle Rick was somewhat a daily fixture in there for years! Always telling storys and jokes.
He's gone now over 15 years. Rest his soul.

Cherokee Yooper, I have that recipe for cookies somewhere here. Will try to find it for you. My mom always used the donut hole cutter to cut a hole in the top so the filling would show thru.

Richard J, I too was at Suomi in the 60's, graduated in '66. Also frequented the Kaleva Cafe.

Hello from Hancock! The Kaleva reopened with new owners (maybe a year ago). My husband and I have gone there for breakfast a few times. The French Toast made with Nisu is great.
While I haven't had their pasty yet, it sure smelled great. The bakery counter looked ymmy also! For some reason I am thinking they are not open late in the evenings, but not sure on that one.

Sounds like a plan to me next summer; we'll be up in July for 2 weeks.....

I'd rather be at the "Bear Belly Ban n Grill" in Lac La Belle, enjoying a burger and diet coke watching the snow fall! Then a trip to Copper Harbor for a DDP and a short jaunt out to High Rock Bay! Now that's livin! Who wants to come along, Marty's at the wheel?

Uncle Chuck I'll go with. What ever a DDP is and where ever High Rock Bay is, I'm game. You just need to slow down for an old biddy like me. Oh yes, warm the vehicle a little first...okay?:>)

Lindells is definitely open. I was there for lunch today with my mom and sister. Very good!!

We're gonna pick you up Kay! lol High Rock Bay is past Copper Harbor at the end of the point, one of our favorite 4 Wheelin rides, it's beautiful out there, and DDP= Diet Dr. Pepper.

My dad used to be a dishwasher at the Kaleva back in the '30s, he was a teenager then. A fella I sailed with on the NORTH AMERICAN used to rent a room upstairs there. His name was Bill Juntunen, but we called him Mr. Peepers.

Ah! The Kaleva Cafe! Brings back great memories of being at Tech. There's nothing like Christmas in the Northland. Wish I were there!

Boy does this picture bring back memories. My aunt mary (nelson) worked in a place called Susie's Hat Shop right near here in this picture.

Christmas lights are 1 of my favorite displays. I like both glow
and twinkle lights.

Thank you so much for the picture of downtown Hancock. I could just see myself and my roomie Pekka going down to Payne's News for a pint of rum to study with. Didn't the bus also drop off and depart from the Kaleva? Once when my local girlfriend was mad at me for something I took my friend Wayne Carlson for lunch there. To cheer me up he said he was the best date I ever had. Needless to say I worked harder to get back in girlfriend's good graces.

I grew up in Hancock and the picture there with D & N in the background, brings back some memories. Sometimes wish I was back there, sitting in the UPHILL and soaking up the suds. Or Nutini's or Crystal Room or Rudy's (Bleachers). Whatever, everything is changing up there, but the one thing that remains the same, somewhat is the Kaleva cafe. hey, I wonder if they still have the HeartBreak Hotel upstairs of the Kaleva...!!! _;) lol.
