What a scarey thought this morning as I got to my office. The temperature at 5:30 was 70 degrees. I get to my office, fire up the computer and look on my homepage (which happens to be Pasty.net) and see that the temp in Calumet is 70 degrees. Obviously the temp here was influenced by Gustav, which all we got out of it was some clouds and a nice northwest breeze that dropped the humidity to a more tolerable level......

We haven't even gotten a cloud yet, Capt. Cold front coming in from guess where, UP and will cool off and stay around 70

Deb, I hope I'm home to close the windows before the rain gets here. The first day of school, the little guy was excited to see his friends.

All I found was a full size picture of the lake and all kinds of trees turning color already. Gorgeous shot!!!!

I found the picture, but it looked the same size as this one. Either way, what a shot. He's got some fabulous pictures in his album.

I have been reminded to thank the little people that I stepped on while striving to get the award. Was a little disapointed that I got the night owl instead of the early bird award. But then I can live with being first and want to thank all who contributed to my win. Mr. Deb reminded me of my obligation to the little people.

Alex, of course your are. Someday if you play your cards right you too can be a winner. Hei on the other side, my way of changing the subject. My grandaughter, Andrea the Irish dancer, is now known as Andrea the diving master. She has joined the diving team, and been accepeted, at her high school. Thursday she will have her first event. Can't wait to see how she does. The way she has won doing Irish dancing makes me think she will be a winner here also. Thanks for letting me brag.

Congrats Mikie! Speaking of bragging...does anyone know if and how a grandma could get one of those flags for her windows that brags of grandkids in the military? You know, the star on a white field? Had my darling Jason headed out last Sat. to Fort Bragg then to Afganastan. Also my wonderful Aaron is in basic training right now at Fort Knox. Appreciate any info given.

Mary says: Check with your local American Legion organization, Kay. Our local ones here in the Keweenaw sell them.

Oh thank you both, Mary and Alex. I'll try the local organization first. Not sure how the boys qualify. Jason definitly will be over in the war zone. But Aaron is not sure what will be for him after his training in topography. Thanks so much.

Mary says: Kay ~ There's no "qualifying" for flying a flag for your Grandsons. These flags are for service men and women who are serving during time of war. Not just if they are directly in the war such as in Afghanistan or Iraq. At least that's my understanding. I have one displayed in our window and our Son is serving in San Diego right now as a Search and Rescue Swimmer Instructor. Whether our military family members are directly in the war or serving our country somewhere else, they are still "serving in the Armed Forces".
Here's some information about displaying the flags,
"From the United States Code, Title 36, Section 901:

Sec. 901. - Service flag and service lapel button


(a) Individuals Entitled To Display Service Flag. -


A service flag approved by the Secretary of Defense may be displayed in a window of the place of residence of individuals who are members of the immediate family of an individual serving in the Armed Forces of the United States during any period of war or hostilities in which the Armed Forces of the United States are engaged."

The best to your Grandsons and please tell them how much we appreciate their service to our country. :->

We have one of those small Blue Star Banners we had hanging on our front door until our oldest daughter retired out of the Air Force recently.
Our oldest grandson is now serving. Does this mean we can hang it back up? I've aways heard Grandparents, Uncles, Aunts, don't qualify, only parents, spouses, children do---?

"Before you start feeling patriotic and go out to buy a flag, know that there are regulations for displaying this flag. For instance, only members of the immediate family (wife, husband, mother, father, stepparent, children, brothers, and sisters) of an active duty service man or woman may fly this flag."

Kudos to Mary for whipping out the Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) Title and Section for an answer. In my line of work I have to use the CFR's everyday, specifically 30 (Mineral Resources) and 40 (Protection of Environment).

Although it seems kinda silly to me; why should there be a regulation restricting the display of a service flag in your residence?? If your supporting the troops overseas, should it really matter if it is immediate family that is serving?? In certain respects, they are all our sons and daughters.......

And to think I grumble about finding stuff in the Michigan Building Code and all its "ifs" that apply. Way to go, Mary! You tackled a Federal one!
