The weather has cooled down, the children are back in school, the summer of 2008 has ended. Memories of all the warm weather fun are still vivid in everyone's mind and in some cases they're recorded as school assignments, telling "what I did this summer". Today we get to look back on a few of the summer memories Brita Haapala's children were fortunate enough to enjoy. Quietly swinging on a tire with the sun illuminating her face, standing together to watch a tug boat at work, running carefree in the warm Superior sand, and the culmination of a splendid day. I can't think of a better way to end a day and calm everyone down before bedtime, than to sit on Superior's shores with the moon glowing above and a fire blazing below.

P.S. In a quiet moment today, we take time to remember the folks who lost their lives during the attacks on our country 7 years ago today.

FLY YOUR FLAGS TODAY, IF YOU DON'T EVERY DAY, LEST WE FORGET. THERE MAY NOT BE THESE CARE FREE DAYS IF WE DO FORGET GOOD PICS.

Enjoying your pictures again, Brita. You sure knew how to end the summer.

Wow! That's a beautiful beach, but surely that's in a bay or inlet, right? Too bloody cold to swim on the open lake, even in the warmest weather as I recall.

About 101 days until they start getting longer again!!!!!!!!!!! I can hardly wait!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 10:41 am:

I've waited far too long to say this, so here goes:

It seems there are very few photographers (those who are parents, in particular!) who have the skill, wisdom and temperament to capture the natural joy, the innocence, the wonderment and the exuberance of youth while resisting the urge to pose the young un's like, vain, self important, insufferable little would-be movie stars.

It's a real joy to behold!

Great pictures, as usual, Brita! This web site is home to a rare few photographers with that special skill, and your photos certainly put you on that short list.

Brita --

All of your photos of your kids are wonderful, and the shot of your daughter on the tire swing is simply radiant. I guessed it was your work when I saw the smaller version on the pasty.com home page.

As adults, your kids will be blessed with an incredible collection of memories because you're working so hard to capture the magic today. Have you considered authoring a coffee table book?

By Brita Haapala (Britach) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 11:46 am:

Wow, I'm overwhelmed by your compliments. I so enjoy sharing some of our moments here on pasty. Summer in the Copper Country is like one long dream vacation.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 12:04 pm:

I agree -- all of Brita's shots are good, but sometimes there's just one that stands out, and the daughter on the swing is one of them! That picture says so much.

How you find time to do great photography with all those kids to take care of is a mystery to me, but I surely admire you!

Nephew Jim:
Glad you are now checking Pasty Central. Great site and sure will give you the scoop on the Keweenaw and more.
Kids are at a friend's ranch north of Houston. These MTU grads stick together it seems.
I think you'd better take a trip to the CC and check out the beaches again. Mustn't stay away too long you know. TK
