You'll have to look closely for this one: What product was previously packed in the bottom box, in the front seat of Paul Roberts' car?

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 05:52 am:

It looks like Smart Start was in the box?

Good morning! I loved the old picture of Lake Linden!! The newer one was good too. Thanks for the memories!

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 08:39 am:

Dan Urbanski really saw the beauty in GOD's handiwork, didn't he! Thanks, Charlie, for keeping his memory alive through his beautiful photography!

Does anyone know why the toxic smelting dust was removed from Torch Lake but not the Red Sands at Lac La Bellle? It is toxic and people are laying and bathing in it?

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 11:13 am:

Good Morning all! Those were all great, Dan really had a great eye.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 03:19 pm:

Theresa, down in Fla., how's the hurricane treating you? Noticed on the radar that there are tornado watches/warnings over southern Florida. Stay safe!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 04:07 pm:

The so called toxic smelting dust, which is really stamp sand, was not removed from Torch Lake. It was determined that the best remediation was to leave it in situ, cover it with topsoil, and plant grass to stabilize the shoreline and not disturb it.

Just as a side note: the chemicals used during the smelting/leaching process were cupric ammonium carbonate, lime, pyridine oils, coal-tar, wood creosote, pine oil, and xanthites.

As far as the toxic red sands of Lac La Belle, please see Dr. Nat's post yesterday about red sandstone, unless iron is now considered toxic (in massive quantities it would be). And if that were the case, then I guess everything north of Chassell may have to be considered an EPA Superfund site!! :P

Pez said: Does anybody know why the toxic smelting dust was removed from Torch Lake but not the Red Sands at Lac La Belle? This stuff is toxic and people are laying and bathing in it?

Pez, The sands in Torch Lake contained creosote and amonia along with other contaminates which were used in the flotation and leeching plants along the lake shore. Those processes were developed after the stamp mill at Lac Labelle was closed.

Is the stamp sand at Lac La Belle Toxic? It is from a smelting site?

Anyone know any good places to stay in the Houghton/Hancock area? I am planning on going to the UP on Aug 28-Sept 7th and I am looking for some place to stay. (Not too expensive)

By Theresa R. Brunk (Trb0013) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 08:32 pm:

I am well and the TS Fay passed me by and decided to go inland around Naples about 175 miles South of me. I had some bursts of wind today but little rain. I was very fortunate. But it is still in the state and looking like it will skip over the state proceed into the Atlantic and head my way AGAIN! Its a wait and see situation. I got plenty of water. and yesterday I bought lots of food and batteries for my 5" B&W TV.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 08:32 pm:

I love the Super 8 in Houghton, down by the lake. Just my opinion though. We stayed there a few years ago and really liked it. We had tried other places in Houghton, and they just weren't as good as the Super 8 was.

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Tuesday, August 19, 2008 - 10:45 pm:

Thanks for the information Deb. I got another tip from another pasty camer and I am going to check both of them out. I have worked so hard all summer and just need some good old UP time!

By Danbury (Danbury) on Friday, August 22, 2008 - 04:56 am:

Last time I disagreed with Capt. Paul on leaving the sands undisturbed and covering them up. Now I've changed my mind to a certain extent. Sorry, Capt., but I needed to hear the details from my own professor to better understand your point.
I'd still maintain it'd be better to remove them. Just nowhere near doable.
As to toxic, I seem to recall that not too long ago a man in Britain died from poisoning with Dihydrogenmonoxide. He just took too much of it, and it worked basically like a toxin, as far as I understood it. Whatever - that's a rare one.
Ok, I admit it. I'm bad.

Really wicked, deadly stuff, that!

Also known as Hydrohydroxic acid, or perhaps Hydroxyl acid, eh?
